Mexico Secures World Cup Knockout Spot; Canada Celebrates First Win
Mexico Advances to Last 32 After Narrow Win Over South Korea
Mexico became the first team to reach the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup by edging out South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara. The lone goal came from Luis Romo, capitalizing on a mistake by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu. This win ensures Mexico will top Group A, guaranteeing them a home match in Mexico City against a third-placed team in the next round.
South Korea currently sit second in Group A with three points, while the Czech Republic and South Africa remain in contention with one point each after their 1-1 draw earlier the same day.
Canada Makes History with First World Cup Victory
In a remarkable display at Vancouver’s BC Place stadium, co-hosts Canada claimed their first-ever World Cup win by routing a depleted Qatar side 6-0. This victory places Canada on the verge of qualifying for the last 32, needing just a draw against Switzerland to top Group B.
Juventus striker Jonathan David scored a hat-trick, while Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba, and an own goal by Mohammad Manai added to the tally. The crowd, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney donning a replica team jersey, witnessed a spirited performance from coach Jesse Marsch’s side.
The triumph was overshadowed by a serious injury to midfielder Ismael Kone, who suffered a suspected broken leg after a challenge by Qatar’s Assim Madibo. Madibo’s initial yellow card was upgraded to red following the incident. Kone was stretchered off and taken to hospital for surgery. Coach Marsch expressed the team’s shock, describing it as a heavy blow since Kone is central to the squad's spirit.
Switzerland Returns to Form With Convincing Win
Switzerland revitalized their tournament hopes with a 4-1 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Johan Manzambi scored twice, with Ruben Vargas and Granit Xhaka adding late goals. Bosnia, who surprised many by beating Italy in qualification, now face an uphill battle to avoid an early exit after securing just one point in two matches.
South Africa and Czech Republic Share Points
A 1-1 draw between South Africa and the Czech Republic in Atlanta kept both teams’ slim chances of advancing alive. Michal Sadilek put the Czechs ahead before Teboho Mokoena converted a late penalty to salvage a point for South Africa. Both teams will likely need wins in their final group matches to secure progression.
