Max Dowman: Arsenal's Teenage Sensation Faces Loan Decision

Mikel Arteta is weighing up whether to send teenage sensation Max Dowman out on loan in January – even as the 16-year-old keeps forcing his name into the conversation on the pitch.

The Arsenal manager confirmed the club will review Dowman’s situation mid-season, leaving the door open for a temporary move that would deprive Emirates Stadium regulars of one of their most exciting emerging talents.

Dowman, regarded as one of the standout prospects in English football, has risen through Arsenal’s academy to secure a place in the first-team squad. Comfortable as an attacking midfielder or out wide, the England Under-19 international has already produced three goals and one assist in 14 senior appearances across all competitions.

Last season he became the youngest scorer in Premier League history and the youngest ever to score for Arsenal. That landmark felt like the start of something. This season, though, the story has stalled slightly in the league. The Premier League champions have yet to hand him a single top-flight minute.

Cup nights keep his flame burning. Dowman struck twice in Arsenal’s 4-2 League Cup win over Ipswich Town on Tuesday, a performance that only sharpened the debate among supporters who want to see him unleashed more regularly.

Arteta understands the excitement, but he is keeping his options open.

“We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision,” he told BBC Sport. “It depends on a lot of factors.

“What he needs, and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes.

“We have to be open, but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team.”

For now, Arsenal have deliberately kept him close. Arteta stressed that the club shut out loan talk in the summer to ensure Dowman was embedded in the senior group from the outset.

“We haven’t really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have Max in the squad, that we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there,” he said.

Arteta knows the loan path well and did not pretend it is a guaranteed route to success.

“There have been many cases of that age when they have gone out and been successful and others not,” he continued. “In my particular case, I was 17 when I went to Paris [St-Germain].

“It depends on the atmosphere that you find there, and how much the coach believes in you as to whether you go there just to be part of a squad or play minutes.

“Which country, it depends.

“But now he is in a good place, let’s keep him here.”

The next immediate question is simple: does Dowman’s Ipswich brace earn him a Premier League outing against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday?

Arteta did not offer any promises. He did, however, spell out the only currency that counts.

“The best way to knock on the door is to do it on the pitch, not in the office,” he said. “Then you just leave out the arguments.

“When a player delivers constantly on the pitch, every single day in training, that’s the best way, that’s the best signal for the manager.

“That’s the best signal for his teammates, too.

“And what Max did the other day, alongside all the other players as well that haven’t played many minutes this season, was really impressive.”

Dowman has made his case. January will reveal whether Arsenal want him learning on loan or growing in the shadows of a title-chasing squad.
