Marc Guiu’s Chelsea story is over almost as quickly as it began. RB Leipzig have struck a permanent deal for the Spanish striker, ending his brief and curious spell at Stamford Bridge after a flurry of secret negotiations behind the scenes.
Talks between Chelsea and Leipzig were kept almost entirely out of public view until Friday evening, when Fabrizio Romano broke cover with his trademark “here we go,” confirming the agreement was done on both club and player side. Guiu is now expected to travel to Germany to complete his medical and sign his contract before the window shuts.
Chelsea have inserted a sell-on clause into the deal, protecting a slice of any future profit, but the final fee remains undisclosed. It is a swift turnaround for a player who only arrived in west London from Barcelona in July 2024.
From La Masia Hope to Chelsea Gamble
Chelsea triggered Guiu’s €6 million release clause at Barcelona, betting on a La Masia striker who had already shown a ruthless streak on the biggest stage. He scored on his first-team debut for Barça against Athletic Club in October 2023, then found the net in the Champions League as well.
That pedigree followed him to England, and when chances finally came, he did not waste them. Guiu smashed a first-half hat-trick against Shamrock Rovers in the 2024-25 UEFA Conference League and added another goal against Ajax in the Champions League. The finishing touch was there. The pathway to the Premier League, far less so.
Minutes in the league proved scarce. Chelsea’s attacking depth and constant churn of options meant Guiu’s role never truly solidified, no matter how sharp he looked in European competition.
Loans, Recall and a Dead End at Stamford Bridge
In August 2025, Chelsea tried to solve the problem with a loan. Sunderland took Guiu, a move designed to give him regular football and a tougher weekly rhythm. It lasted only weeks.
An injury to Liam Delap forced Chelsea into an early recall, dragging Guiu back into a crowded forward line. He made several more appearances but still could not dislodge established options and never became a regular starter.
The picture grew even bleaker at the start of the 2026-27 season. Under new head coach Xabi Alonso, Guiu did not receive a squad number. Chelsea added more attacking players and made it clear they wanted to trim the group. For Guiu, the message was unmistakable: his future lay elsewhere.
Leipzig Pounce After Quiet Chase
While Chelsea weighed up their options, the market circled. Napoli pushed hardest at one stage, reportedly agreeing personal terms with Guiu, but talks stalled when the two clubs could not align on his valuation. Chelsea had been looking for around €25 million with a sell-on clause attached during those discussions.
Manchester City monitored the situation, and Sevilla explored a loan that would have taken Guiu back to Spain. None of those moves materialised.
That opened the door for Leipzig. Working in the shadows, the Bundesliga club moved with minimal noise and no public leaks, eventually closing the agreement that Romano revealed on Friday. The structure mirrors Chelsea’s earlier stance: a permanent sale, plus a sell-on clause that keeps them financially tied to his future.
A Classic Leipzig Project
For Leipzig, Guiu fits a familiar blueprint. At 1.89m, he offers size, strength and aerial presence, but he also arrives with European goals on his record and the pedigree of Barcelona’s academy on his CV. Leipzig have built a reputation on taking young forwards, giving them real minutes in the Bundesliga and turning potential into market value.
Guiu, still searching for a permanent home in senior football, now walks into a club that specialises in exactly that process. If he wins a place in the starting XI and continues to score, Leipzig gain a powerful new weapon, and Chelsea stand to benefit down the line through the sell-on clause.
The move will become official once Guiu completes his medical and signs the paperwork in Germany. For a striker who has already scored in La Liga and in Europe but never truly settled in England, the next chapter starts in Leipzig. The question now is whether this is the club where his promise finally hardens into a permanent role at the top level.
