Manchester United's Transfer Strategies: Raum, Kroupi, Obi, and Zirkzee

Manchester United’s late-window juggling act is starting to take shape, with defensive targets under review, a pundit pushing for an attacking wildcard, and one high-profile forward edging towards the exit.

Raum remains on INEOS radar

Manchester United’s search for a left-back has not drifted away from David Raum.

The RB Leipzig defender, who is into the final year of his contract, is still being monitored by the club’s INEOS-led recruitment team, according to TeamTALK. His name has been in the frame for some time as United weigh up options on that flank, and the expiring deal only sharpens the sense that a move could be there to be made.

No bid yet, no breakthrough. But he has not been crossed off the list.

McCoist pushes Kroupi as “smart” United move

While United’s hierarchy study the market, Ally McCoist has thrown a different kind of idea into the mix.

The former Scotland international has urged the club to look closely at Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi, even though the forward is sidelined with a pre-season injury and is expected to be out for a while.

Speaking to talkSPORT Bet, McCoist acknowledged how ambitious that sounds given Bournemouth’s rise and their recent statement wins.

“At this stage, it's crazy to say Junior Kroupi could play a level up, right? Because Bournemouth have been terrific, as have teams like Brighton, and they are more than capable of holding their own, as we've seen with Bournemouth winning at Arsenal and winning at Newcastle,” he said.

“I mean, Bournemouth fans are probably saying, ‘What's he talking about?’ But to go to the next level would be to play for maybe a top four or top five team and play Champions League football.

“In my opinion, he absolutely would not look out of place at a team like Manchester United. I'm more than comfortable with that. He’d be a smart signing.”

An injured forward as a “smart signing” for a club under pressure to deliver immediately is a bold shout. McCoist clearly believes the talent is worth the wait.

Feyenoord circle for Obi loan

One youngster could be heading out to find that same kind of opportunity.

Chido Obi, who arrived from Arsenal in 2024, is attracting interest from Feyenoord. The Danish forward has made only a handful of first-team appearances and has struggled to force his way into Michael Carrick’s senior plans.

Reports in the Netherlands suggest Feyenoord are keen to take him on loan. For United, a temporary move would offer valuable minutes and a high-level environment; for the player, it might be the quickest route to proving he belongs at the top end of European football.

Zirkzee eyes exit as deadline looms

The most immediate decision, though, surrounds Joshua Zirkzee.

The Dutch striker, signed in 2024 with high expectations, wants to leave Old Trafford before Tuesday’s deadline, with The Daily Mail reporting that he expects a move to be sealed before the window shuts. He has not kicked on as many inside and outside the club had hoped and does not figure in Carrick’s plans.

That reality has opened the door to a scramble for his signature.

Aston Villa are understood to be leading the chase in England, while Napoli, Juventus and Roma have all been mentioned as possible destinations on the continent. For United, his departure would free up wages and a squad slot. For Zirkzee, it looks like a necessary reset.

Four names, four different crossroads: a full-back on the shortlist, a pundit’s pick from Bournemouth, a prospect wanted in Rotterdam, and a striker ready to walk away. How United navigate those calls in the next few days will say plenty about what this new era really looks like.
