Manchester United Target Mateus Fernandes Amid Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is gathering speed, and the next piece of the plan has a distinctly claret-and-blue tint. The club are now strong favourites to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with Old Trafford executives increasingly confident of beating off heavyweight competition for one of the Premier League’s few bright sparks in a relegated side.

United have already locked in Ederson as the first major signing of their summer reshaping. With Champions League football returning and the calendar about to tighten, the club want at least one more central midfielder to carry the load. Ederson will arrive after the 2026 World Cup, where a late Brazil call-up has delayed his switch, but the work behind the scenes at Carrington has not stopped.

Fernandes Becomes the Priority

Initial dreams of prising Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest or Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid have faded. The finances and circumstances around those deals pushed United towards a more realistic – but no less ambitious – option.

That path leads straight to Fernandes.

The Portugal international stood out in a grim West Ham campaign, one of the few players to emerge with credit from a season that ended with the Irons dropping into the Championship. It is a scenario he knows all too well after suffering relegation with Southampton, and sources around the player are clear: he has no interest in a second season outside the top flight.

United have moved quickly. Personal terms with the 21-year-old are said to be agreed, a crucial step in any deal of this size. The real fight now lies with West Ham, who value their midfielder at around £85m and know several clubs are circling.

That price, and that competition, are the last major obstacles.

PSG and Spurs Hover, But United Lead

Fernandes’ preference appears clear. Reports indicate he is keen on a move to Old Trafford, drawn by the chance to play alongside his idol and compatriot Bruno Fernandes at the so-called Theatre of Dreams. For a young Portuguese midfielder, there are few more powerful pulls.

The market, though, rarely allows for a simple procession.

Paris Saint-Germain have registered their interest, attracted by a player some around West Ham have dubbed a “superstar” in waiting. Tottenham Hotspur have stepped into the race as well, and word from north London is that Spurs are “very close” to agreeing personal terms of their own.

Yet a fresh update from United’s side has calmed nerves among their supporters. According to the Old Trafford camp, Spurs remain a distant second in the chase. That hierarchy is not expected to change unless United themselves decide to walk away from the negotiating table.

For now, the initiative remains firmly in Manchester.

Summerville Emerges as Wide Option

The midfield rebuild may be the headline act, but it is not the only storyline running through United’s summer. The recruitment team are also working on the attacking department, with a particular focus on the left side.

GIVEMESPORT sources have consistently indicated that United want a left-sided attacker, with Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers among those admired. Recently, though, another name has surged to the forefront: Crysencio Summerville.

The Dutch winger, another West Ham player, is catching the eye on the biggest stage. Two goals in two games for the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup in North America have underlined his rise, and his club situation adds intrigue. Following West Ham’s relegation, Summerville is understood to be available for around £50m.

One reporter has claimed United have already put a six-year contract on the table for the 24-year-old, a clear signal of how central they believe he could become in the next cycle of the team.

Any move for Summerville may hinge on what happens with Marcus Rashford. An exit for the England international could accelerate United’s push for a new wide forward, but one potential destination has cooled. Barcelona, who held a buy option, have not taken it up, leaving Rashford’s future unresolved and the dominoes still standing.

United’s summer, then, is shaping into a high-stakes puzzle: an £85m-rated Portuguese midfielder, a World Cup‑hot Dutch winger, and a homegrown star whose next step could define the shape of the attack. The pieces are on the table. Now comes the hard part – putting them together before the season starts.
