Manchester United Target Liverpool Striker Vincent Joseph as Academy Rivalry Grows

The days of direct transfers between Manchester United and Liverpool are long gone. More than 60 years have passed since a player last crossed that divide in a straight deal. The rivalry has simply grown too sharp, too political, too emotionally loaded.

The battleground now is different. It’s the academies.

In 2021, United slipped past Liverpool to lure winger Ethan Ennis to Carrington, persuading the youngster to reject a contract on Merseyside. Ennis is still on United’s books, building his career through loan spells at Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town.

Now, they are circling again.

United move for Liverpool striker Vincent Joseph

According to The Secret Scout, a well-regarded voice on youth football and transfers, Liverpool’s 16-year-old striker Vincent Joseph “looks set to leave” the club after being omitted from their latest list of scholars.

That omission has opened the door. United have stepped towards it.

The Secret Scout reported on X that United “hold strong interest” in Joseph, a forward whose blend of physical presence and neat link-up play has drawn admiring glances from scouts across Europe. He is not just another academy name; he is a profile clubs are scrambling to find.

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have both sent scouts to watch him on multiple occasions. German clubs have made a habit of pouncing on English youth talent, and Joseph has clearly landed on their radar.

His numbers at youth level hint at why. The England U16 international made only two appearances in the U18 Premier League last season, but still managed to score three goals. Limited minutes, big impact.

“Interesting to see where he ends up. Not many top number 9s around. He will be in demand,” The Secret Scout added. It reads less like hype, more like a statement of the current market: genuine centre-forwards are scarce, especially ones with size, mobility and a nose for goal.

If United pull this off, it would be another symbolic win in the quiet, relentless tug-of-war between the two northwest giants at youth level.

Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong also on United’s radar

Joseph is not the only teenager catching eyes at Old Trafford.

United and Bayern are also understood to be admirers of Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, a towering 20-year-old who has been marked out as one of the more promising defensive prospects in their system.

Recent reporting relayed by The Peoples Person claimed Acheampong has made his way onto United’s list of targets. He fits a clear profile: young, physically imposing, and with room to grow into a first-team role in the coming years.

Chelsea, though, are not playing along. The London club have reportedly turned down approaches from several unnamed sides, treating Acheampong as effectively untouchable. For now, at least, they intend to keep one of their most valued academy products exactly where he is.

INEOS plan: marquee names and future stars

Much of the noise around United since Champions League qualification has centred on marquee signings, the kind of headline arrivals that signal the INEOS era with a jolt. Big fees. Big reputations. Big expectations.

Yet the pursuit of players like Joseph and Acheampong points to a broader strategy. United are not just chasing ready-made stars; they are trying to rebuild the pipeline beneath them, stacking the academy and early senior ranks with high-upside talent.

It is a long-term play. One that will not make as many back-page splashes as a blockbuster transfer, but could shape the club’s spine for the next decade.

If United can prise a rising No 9 from Liverpool’s grasp and muscle into Chelsea’s defensive plans in the same summer, the message is clear: the fight for the future is already underway, and it is being waged far from the glare of the first-team spotlight.
