Manchester United Targeting Alex Scott for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has a new focal point – and Bournemouth know it.

Alex Scott, one of the Premier League’s standout young midfielders since his move to the south coast, has emerged as United’s preferred target for the summer window, according to reporter Samuel Luckhurst. The chase, though, is already tangled in hard numbers and harder stances.

United have drawn up a long shortlist of midfield options, but Scott’s name now sits at the top after they missed out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes. Those deals set a bruising benchmark: Tottenham and Manchester City were prepared to pay fees United simply did not want to match.

That reluctance has shaped this window. United want to be smarter, leaner, more disciplined with their spending. They are trying to avoid the familiar trap of overpaying out of panic.

Scott is testing that resolve.

Bournemouth value the 20-year-old at around £80 million and are not shy about it. They are also working to extend his contract, a move Luckhurst reports is likely to come with a release clause baked in. That would give the Cherries protection and, crucially, clarity over his price in future windows.

For now, though, United have not walked away. Luckhurst claims the club have not ruled out making a bid, even at that steep valuation, and they remain firmly in the race for his signature. No formal offer, no formal end to their interest. Just a high-stakes waiting game.

Scott’s rise explains the noise. Since arriving at Bournemouth, he has grown into one of the most admired young midfielders in the division, drawing attention from several clubs. He carries the blend of technical quality, energy and upside that fits the profile United want as they reshape the core of their side.

The problem is timing. United’s need in midfield is no longer a distant planning exercise; it is a priority. They want at least one midfielder through the door this summer. Targets have already slipped away. The margin for another miss is shrinking.

They are trying to hold the line on fees after watching others pay premium prices for Anderson and Fernandes. That stance is understandable. It is also risky. At some point, as the window ticks on, they will have to decide whether Scott is the player worth breaking their new-found restraint for.

Bournemouth, secure in their valuation and intent on a new deal, can afford to be stubborn. United, searching for a midfielder who can anchor their next cycle, cannot afford another empty-handed pursuit.

Sooner rather than later, they will have to choose: stay disciplined, or push the button on Alex Scott.
