Manchester United Sign Carlos Baleba for £70m

Manchester United have finally landed Carlos Baleba, completing a deal with Brighton that could rise to £70m and underlines just how aggressively the club have chosen to rebuild their midfield.

The 22-year-old Cameroon international becomes United’s third central signing of the summer, following Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Taken together, the outlay on those three now sits at around £148m – a clear response to Casemiro’s departure and the serious knee injury suffered by Manuel Ugarte.

Baleba has signed a five-year contract with an option for an extra 12 months, after United agreed a £65m fee plus £5m in add-ons and a sell-on clause with Brighton. It is a heavyweight commitment for a player United first tried to prise away a year ago.

Back then, Brighton simply refused to sell. United cooled their pursuit. The interest never really died.

Baleba did not hit his highest level last season on the south coast, but United’s recruitment team stayed locked on the midfielder and moved decisively a week ago to revive the transfer. This time, Brighton were ready to talk, and United were ready to pay.

For Baleba, the move is the fulfilment of a long-held ambition.

United are banking on exactly that. Baleba’s profile – athletic, technically secure, able to operate in multiple roles across midfield – fits a squad that has been reshaped with energy and versatility in mind.

Director of football Jason Wilcox made no attempt to play down the scale of the signing.

“Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad,” Wilcox said. “We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League.”
