Manchester United Intensify Efforts to Retain JJ Gabriel
Manchester United are ramping up their efforts to keep highly rated teenager JJ Gabriel out of Chelsea’s reach, as the club continues an aggressive summer rebuild ahead of their Champions League return.
United have already reshaped their midfield with the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, and the recruitment drive is far from over. A third midfielder is still on the agenda, along with a left-back, a winger and potentially a new centre-forward. At the same time, the club is fighting just as hard behind the scenes to secure its next generation.
United dig in over JJ Gabriel
At the heart of that youth strategy sits JJ Gabriel, a 15-year-old striker viewed inside Carrington as one of the standout prospects in the academy. His numbers at youth level back that up: 29 goals in 32 games for the U18s, a return that has quickly drawn attention from across Europe.
Chelsea are leading the external chase, described as Gabriel’s strongest suitor outside Old Trafford, with other Premier League and European clubs also circling. United, though, are not standing still. The club is pushing for an agreement over a new deal and, according to reports, feel increasingly confident they can keep him.
The key moment comes in October. Once Gabriel becomes eligible to sign scholarship terms, the spotlight on his future will intensify, and United know it. The message publicly is one of calm assurance, but inside the club there is a clear urgency: do everything possible to protect one of the most coveted young forwards in the game and ensure his rapid rise continues in Manchester, not London or abroad.
Striker search turns towards Nicolo Tresoldi
While they work to lock in Gabriel’s future, United are also scouring the market for a more immediate solution up front. Their search has now swung towards Club Brugge forward Nicolo Tresoldi, with reports claiming the club have stepped up their interest.
Tresoldi is firmly on the radar of Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and Barcelona, with his price expected to land in the €45–50m range – around £43m. Barcelona are currently viewed as favourites and are accelerating their move after the departure of Robert Lewandowski, but their financial constraints could yet open the door for a Premier League bid.
In a window dominated by inflated fees, Tresoldi’s valuation is being seen by several clubs as comparatively reasonable for a young striker of his profile. Multiple industry sources are said to view him as a serious option for Chelsea, United and Spurs as they look for reliable goals without paying the absolute top-end premiums.
United, then, find themselves juggling two very different striker battles: one for a 15-year-old phenomenon they hope will define their future, and another for a £43m forward who could shape their present. How they handle both will say plenty about the club’s planning in a season where there is no margin for missteps.
