Manchester United are refusing to give up on a deadline-day move for Newcastle defender Hall, but are running straight into a wall of resistance from the Magpies, according to the Daily Mail.
Old Trafford decision-makers have tracked the 21-year-old England international all summer and remain convinced he is the long-term answer on the left side of their defence. Their admiration has not cooled. The timing, though, could hardly be worse.
Newcastle stand firm
Newcastle have made it clear they do not want to lose Hall today. The full-back is viewed as a key piece of their squad, and the Tyneside club are reluctant to approve yet another major exit in this window.
They have already seen Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon depart, and there is little appetite at St James’ Park to sanction a fourth high-profile sale. That stance leaves United facing a serious struggle to pull off a late deal.
The Daily Mail report that Newcastle would only consider cashing in if an offer above £75m lands on their desk. Anything less, and they are prepared to hold their ground.
Hall’s rise and frustration
Hall has rapidly grown into one of the standout left-backs in the Premier League since his £35m move from Chelsea in 2023. His consistency and composure have made him one of Newcastle’s most reliable performers.
Despite his club form, he missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad, a decision that is understood to have left the defender deeply frustrated. That disappointment fed into his desire for a fresh start earlier in the summer, when he pushed to leave Newcastle and made clear his interest in joining United.
Carrick’s left-back dilemma
United manager Michael Carrick wants extra protection on the left of his defence as the club heads back into the Champions League. Luke Shaw started all 38 Premier League games last season and enjoyed one of his best campaigns, but there are lingering internal doubts over his form going forward and his ability to maintain peak fitness across another gruelling year.
Hall, younger and already proven in the league, fits the profile United are chasing. The problem is prising him out of a club that feels it has already sold enough of its core.
Likely delay, not defeat
Despite United’s admiration and Hall’s openness to the move, the numbers and the timing are against a breakthrough before the window shuts. The most realistic scenario, as things stand, is that United delay any formal bid and revisit the situation down the line.
They have done it before. The club took a similar long-game approach with Carlos Baleba, shelving their move for 12 months after early talks stalled, then finally getting the transfer over the line this summer.
The question now is whether Hall becomes the next long-term target on that list – and whether Newcastle can hold their nerve if United come back with serious money in the next window.
