Manchester United Pursue Alejandro Balde as Enzo Fernández Transfer Pressure Mounts
The window is drifting toward its frantic final days and the biggest clubs are starting to show their hands. Manchester United are closing in on a move for Alejandro Balde, Manchester City are preparing a huge play for Enzo Fernández, and the Saudi Pro League is circling some of the Premier League’s biggest names.
This is where the market starts to bite.
United circle Balde as Shaw concerns grow
Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde, with direct talks expected soon between the club and the 22-year-old’s agent, Jorge Mendes, according to Nicolo Schira.
United’s interest is no passing glance. Sources told ESPN the club have been monitoring Balde’s situation closely, driven by concern over Luke Shaw’s ability to handle the physical load of three games a week across the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.
The club have already tested the market at left-back, enquiring earlier in the window about Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall. Balde, though, offers a different profile: younger, proven at the elite level with Barça, and potentially a long-term solution in a position United have patched rather than perfected in recent seasons.
If Barcelona open the door, United intend to be standing right there.
Enzo and City: pressure rising on Chelsea
At Stamford Bridge, another storm is building.
Manchester City are preparing a proposal for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández, Fabrizio Romano reports, with the Premier League champions expected to come in hard for the 25-year-old. The exact timing of City’s formal move is not yet clear, but the intent is.
Personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block. The Argentina international has already given the green light to proceed, according to the same reports, and Nicolo Schira adds that Fernández is actively pushing for the transfer. City, for their part, are described as confident of getting a deal done at around €130 million.
For Chelsea, who invested heavily to bring Fernández in and have built much of their midfield structure around him, the stakes are obvious. Lose him now, and the club face ripping up another key part of a project that has barely had time to settle.
Villa test Palace resolve over Mateta
Aston Villa’s search for attacking reinforcements has taken them back to a familiar name.
Unai Emery’s side have submitted an offer for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, The Athletic reports, but the bid falls well short of Palace’s valuation. Villa’s need is clear: Ollie Watkins’ future remains uncertain, while Tammy Abraham and Brian Madjo are both sidelined with injuries.
Villa also weighed up a move for Mateta in January. Since then, the 29-year-old has become embroiled in a dispute with Palace over the final year of his contract, adding another layer of tension to a negotiation that was already complicated by price.
Villa want a No. 9 who can walk straight into a European campaign. Palace, though, will not let Mateta go on the cheap.
Juventus lose faith in Kolo Muani and turn to Sørloth
In Turin, patience with Randal Kolo Muani is wearing thin.
Juventus are unimpressed with the forward’s performances since his return to the club and have turned their attention to Atlético Madrid striker Alexander Sørloth, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Norway international is currently being favoured over Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee. The feeling inside Juve is that Sørloth’s characteristics suit their needs better: more direct, more physical, more in tune with the way they want to attack.
To bring the cost down, Juve could include Nicolas González as part of the deal. The 28-year-old wants to stay with Atleti following the end of his loan, which gives all three parties a potential path to agreement.
If Juventus move decisively, Kolo Muani’s second chance may not last long.
Galatasaray still chasing Rafael Leão
Over in Milan, one saga refuses to go away.
AC Milan winger Rafael Leão remains firmly on Galatasaray’s radar after Aston Villa pulled out of the race, Gazzetta dello Sport reports. The Rossoneri, though, are standing firm: they want €50m plus a further €10m in bonuses for the 27-year-old.
Galatasaray are persisting, ready to increase their latest offer, but are reluctant to hit the full figures Milan are demanding. The Turkish champions see Leão as a marquee signing, the kind of wide forward who can tilt a title race and deepen their impact in Europe.
Milan know exactly what they have. Gala know exactly what they want. The gap is in the numbers.
PSG and Liverpool reignite Barcola talks
On the continent, a familiar name is back on Liverpool’s agenda.
Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool restarted discussions on Tuesday over the transfer of Bradley Barcola, sources told ESPN. Liverpool are making a renewed push to complete a deal before the window closes as they look to sharpen their attacking options.
Talks had cooled earlier in the summer. Now, with the deadline approaching and squads being finalised, both clubs are back at the table.
Nico González to Newcastle agreed
Newcastle United, meanwhile, have their next midfield piece lined up.
Nico González’s move from Manchester City to St James’ Park has been agreed, sources told ESPN. The fee is set at £52m, with Newcastle paying an initial £48m and a further £4m in potential add-ons.
The Spanish midfielder arrives as part of Newcastle’s continued push to deepen a squad that has been stretched by domestic and European demands. It is a statement spend, and another sign that City’s bench remains a rich hunting ground for ambitious rivals.
Around Europe: keepers, wingers and Saudi money
The rest of the market is moving fast.
Chelsea are exploring a deal for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez as they scramble to bring in a new No. 1 before the deadline, according to Football Insider.
Atlético Madrid have made contact with Juventus over Jonathan David, Fabrizio Romano reports, though no formal negotiations have taken place yet.
At Arsenal, a major outgoing is close. Talks with Al Hilal are at the final stages for Gabriel Martinelli to move to the Saudi Pro League in a deal worth over €65m, Romano adds.
Al Hilal are not stopping there. Ollie Watkins has agreed personal terms with the Saudi club, Nicolo Schira reports, and they are now in advanced talks with Aston Villa.
In Serie A, Como have tabled a second offer for Fiorentina striker Moise Kean, with the package rising to €40m including bonuses, according to Schira.
Al Hilal have also started to show interest in Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr, with Galatasaray still pushing to sign him as well, Footmercato reports.
Roma, for their part, have an agreement in place with Malick Fofana and are weighing up whether to trigger a move, with Lyon holding out for over €35m, Romano says.
Bayer Leverkusen are targeting Al Ittihad winger Moussa Diaby, Romano reports, as they look to refresh their wide options after a title-winning season that has raised expectations.
Roma have also joined Juventus in monitoring free agent midfielder Franck Kessie, according to Sky Sports Italia, as Italian clubs hunt value late in the window.
Newcastle’s recruitment drive is not finished either. TEAMtalk reports that the club are looking at Feyenoord’s Anis Hadj Moussa and Real Betis’ Abde Ezzalzouli as they search for a winger.
Brighton & Hove Albion have asked for information on AC Milan midfielder Youssouf Fofana, Schira reports, while Milan themselves are pushing to sign 23-year-old Young Boys attacking midfielder Alvyn Sanches, according to Sky Sports Italia.
Deals are close, bids are coming, and big names are edging toward the exit. The clock is ticking now: who blinks first?
