Manchester United Pursue New Contract for Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United have started formal groundwork on a new contract for Bruno Fernandes, determined to shut down the noise around their captain’s future and keep him at Old Trafford for the long haul.
Talks have opened with the Portugal international over fresh terms, with United intent on rewarding their talisman after a summer laced with speculation about a move away from the Premier League. The club are not waiting for the situation to drift. They want clarity, and they want it soon.
United hold a one-year extension option in Fernandes’ current deal and are ready to trigger it as a safety net. That clause, inherited from his last renewal, gives the club crucial leverage, ensuring he cannot run down his contract into its final months without United retaining control over his market value.
As it stands, Fernandes has around 10 months remaining on his £220,000-a-week agreement. The extension option would push that out by another year, but the club hierarchy are pushing for a fully updated contract before the end of the calendar year to kill off any lingering transfer talk.
On the Pitch
On the pitch, Fernandes has made the timing of those talks impossible to ignore. Fresh from being named PFA Player of the Year, he produced a devastating display at the weekend, scoring a hat-trick and adding an assist in a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town. It was the kind of performance that underlines why United are so desperate to keep him – and why others are circling.
Galatasaray have emerged as one of the most serious threats to United’s plans. The Turkish giants are reported to be ready with a four-year proposal that would effectively double his current wages. Their offer is believed to include a £3.5 million signing-on fee, a package designed to tempt a player entering the latter stages of his peak years.
It is not the first time Fernandes has stood at a crossroads. Last summer, he came close to a dramatic switch to the Saudi Pro League. His agent, Miguel Pinho, held high-level talks in Riyadh with Al-Hilal, who were prepared to put an extraordinary £200 million, spread over three years, on the table for the midfielder.
United held firm then, and Fernandes stayed. Since his arrival from Sporting CP in January 2020, he has become the heartbeat of the side, the player through whom almost everything flows. His numbers are staggering: 110 goals and 109 assists in 329 appearances across all competitions. Last season he set a new Premier League benchmark with 21 assists, reinforcing his status as one of the most creative players the division has seen.
Fernandes has spoken often about the demands of playing for United and the standards expected at Old Trafford. He understands the scrutiny. He also understands his responsibility at the centre of a team now trying to redefine itself.
New Identity
Under Michael Carrick’s leadership, United are attempting to shape a new identity, and Fernandes sits at the core of that project. His vision, work rate and relentless output make him almost impossible to replace. That reality is driving United’s urgency behind the scenes.
Reports suggest the club are prepared to make Fernandes their highest-paid player to reflect his importance. The proposed package would see his deal extended by at least another year, with wages rising to around £350,000 per week.
United know what they have. Galatasaray and others know it too. The only question now is whether Old Trafford can turn negotiations into a signature before another heavyweight comes calling with an offer too big to ignore.
