Manchester United's Midfield Pursuit: The Mateus Fernandes Dilemma

Manchester United are deep in the market for midfield reinforcements, but the numbers being thrown around this summer are testing even their resolve.

At the heart of it all sits Mateus Fernandes.

United vs West Ham: The £80m stand-off

United’s hopes of landing the West Ham midfielder hinge on one thing: the London club backing down from their £80million valuation. Talks are ongoing, according to reports, but the gap is clear. United want the player. West Ham want the fee.

Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle, with Fernandes understood to be keen on the move. The problem is the price, and United have so far shown little appetite to simply meet the demand.

Tottenham, by contrast, are ready to play harder. They are described as being firmly in the race and, crucially, more comfortable with both the asking price and the wage package. Right now, that stance puts Spurs ahead of United in a battle for a player both clubs see as central to their midfield rebuilds.

United’s reluctance is not new. It is becoming a theme of their summer.

Diomande, Amad and Milan rumours that go nowhere

Over at the World Cup, Yan Diomande is sharing an Ivory Coast camp with United’s Amad. The 23-year-old has endured a stop-start tournament, with only one of his three appearances coming from the start and another cut short at half-time.

Even so, his name has been dragged into the rumour mill. Reports linked him with AC Milan and a reunion with Ruben Amorim, while Mason Mount was also mentioned as a possible target for the Serie A club, the former United manager said to be an admirer.

That noise has since been shut down. It is being widely reported there is no substance to Milan’s interest in either Diomande or Mount. Milan’s attention, for now, is said to be on completing a deal for Goncalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain.

Ugarte injury forces a rethink

Back at Old Trafford, another planned exit has been thrown into doubt.

Manuel Ugarte, who had been earmarked for a summer departure, has suffered a serious knee ligament injury at the World Cup. His club confirmed the setback last night, and the expectation is that he will miss a significant spell.

The Athletic report that the injury will affect United’s transfer planning, with Ugarte no longer an obvious candidate to be moved on. Transfermarkt value him at around €25m (£21m), a useful fee that now looks unlikely to materialise quickly.

One domino falls, and the rest of the strategy has to be re-drawn.

Diomande chooses Paris, not England

Yan Diomande is another name United tracked before turning away. The RB Leipzig midfielder had looked destined for the Premier League, with Liverpool pushing hardest and making clear they were ready to pay a big fee.

Just not big enough.

Leipzig’s valuation is believed to be in excess of £100million, a figure that could climb further off the back of Diomande’s World Cup displays for Ivory Coast. According to The Athletic, the player has now chosen Paris Saint-Germain as his preferred destination if he moves this summer.

Liverpool, for all their interest, would not meet the German club’s demands. United had already stepped aside. PSG, armed with deeper pockets and a clear plan, are now in position.

Anderson race proves United’s restraint

The same story played out with Elliot Anderson, but with a different twist.

Manchester City have moved decisively for the Nottingham Forest midfielder, with The Telegraph reporting that he has passed his medical and the deal should be completed this week. City will pay Forest £116million.

United were heavily linked with Anderson earlier in the year, but walked away as soon as they understood the scale of the asking price. From their perspective, that decision now looks vindicated. City, not United, are the ones paying nine figures for a player Forest were willing to sell.

In a market where rivals are flinging huge sums at potential, United are trying to pick their battles.

Bouaddi interest grows crowded

One of those battles could yet be for Ayyoub Bouaddi.

The Lille midfielder has emerged as a serious alternative to Mateus Fernandes, but United are far from alone. RMC’s Fabrice Hawkins reports that Manchester City, Arsenal and Bayern Munich are all in the race.

Lille value Bouaddi between €80m (£69m) and €100m (£86m). That figure may not be static. Strong World Cup performances for Morocco could push his price higher, and Lille know it. They are open to selling, but would prefer to take him back on loan for a season to continue his development.

So any club signing him this summer would be paying elite money for a player they might not see regularly until 2025.

Ederson deal done, but the big call remains

One deal is already in the bag. United have agreed a £38.8m fee with Atalanta for Brazil midfielder Ederson, a move that gives their midfield a different profile and some much-needed energy.

Yet the marquee question remains unresolved.

Do they hold their line on Mateus Fernandes and risk losing him to Tottenham, or do they finally blink and move closer to West Ham’s £80million stance? In a window defined by eye-watering fees, United are trying to be selective.

Soon enough, they will have to decide whether Fernandes is the one they are willing to bend for.
