Liverpool's Defensive Rebuild: Ronald Araujo and Potential Jules Kounde Move

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild may not be finished with Ronald Araujo — and Barcelona could be at the heart of it again.

The club’s backline still looks light. Centre-back has been a concern for months, but right-back is the position that keeps flashing red. Conor Bradley’s long-term absence and Jeremie Frimpong’s recurring issues have left Liverpool exposed on the flank, forcing Andoni Iraola to juggle options rather than trust a settled solution.

Kounde is primarily a right-back these days, yet he carries serious pedigree at centre-back. That dual profile has made him invaluable at Barcelona, where he has delivered consistently strong performances in both roles over recent seasons.

At 27, he is entering his peak. Since swapping Sevilla for Barcelona, Kounde has racked up 188 appearances for the Blaugrana, trusted across different systems and demands. Under Flick, his intensity and work rate have stood out in a high-pressing setup that would not feel alien under Iraola.

Flick’s own words earlier this year painted the picture of a defender Liverpool would love to have.

“Jules is a fighter,” he said. “He’s always focused. We’re all human, and sometimes you don’t have your best day, but he’s always fighting. Even when things don’t start well. I appreciate what he’s doing. He has a top-notch mentality.”

That mentality is exactly what Liverpool’s recruitment team has tried to hardwire into every signing: technically strong, tactically flexible, relentlessly competitive.

On paper, Kounde ticks every box. He offers short-term security and long-term planning in one move, fortifying right-back while deepening the pool at centre-back. For a club trying to refresh a defence without tearing it apart, that kind of profile is gold.
