Manchester United Pursue Khephren Thuram for Midfield Revamp
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild under Michael Carrick is gathering pace, and the next move could come from Turin.
With Ederson already through the door from Atalanta in a deal worth more than £40million, United have made a decisive start on reshaping the centre of the pitch after Casemiro’s departure. It is only a start. Carrick and the Old Trafford hierarchy know that if last season’s third-place finish in the Premier League is to become something more serious – a title challenge, a deeper run in the Champions League – at least one more major midfield signing has to follow.
Right now, Khephren Thuram is moving rapidly up the list.
Juventus under pressure, United watching
The Juventus midfielder has emerged as a live option, with the Italian club facing uncomfortable financial realities after missing out on Champions League qualification. Reports in Italy suggest Juve need to raise between £10million and £11million by the end of the month to remain compliant, a relatively small figure that could force bigger decisions.
Thuram cost Juventus around €20million, but the asking price has climbed. The Serie A side are now understood to be demanding between £35million and £40million, a figure slightly below the numbers previously floated but still a clear profit on their investment.
According to Corriere dello Sport’s print edition, relayed via Man Utd news, United are actively weighing up whether to meet that valuation. They are not alone. Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia are already prepared to pay what Juventus want, yet the dynamics of the deal tilt back towards Europe.
Thuram is said to favour staying on the continent. More than that, a move to the Premier League is understood to be his preferred route, and he has already rejected Galatasaray this summer. For a club like United, trying to convince ambitious players they are back on an upward curve, that stance matters.
The profile Carrick craves
On the pitch, Thuram fits the brief. He is a true box-to-box midfielder, the kind who covers ground relentlessly and relishes the physical contest. United’s engine room has lacked that blend of power and mobility since Casemiro’s influence began to wane; Ederson brings bite and control, but Carrick wants layers, not a single solution.
Thuram offers energy in abundance, driving from deep, breaking lines with and without the ball, and giving a side the legs to compress the pitch. He does not shirk duels. He imposes himself.
His qualities have not gone unnoticed in Italy. Last year, Maurizio Sarri’s long-time assistant Giovanni Martusciello picked him out for special praise, saying: “Who do I like? Thuram, I think he’s extraordinary. Overall, they seem like a team that can have its say until the end. Then, to fight for the big goals, at least the ones they’ve always had in Turin, we need more time.”
That word – “extraordinary” – will not be lost on United’s recruitment team, who have been tasked with finding players entering their prime rather than exiting it.
Thuram is 25. There is development still to come, but enough experience already banked to step into a demanding environment. Crucially, he is currently free to speak to interested clubs, not being tied up by international duty after missing out on France’s World Cup squad.
For United, the equation is clear. They have started their midfield renovation with Ederson. They need another pillar to turn a solid season into something more threatening.
If they decide Thuram is that player and move fast while Juventus are under pressure to sell, this summer’s work in the middle of the park could define what Carrick’s United look like for years.
