Manchester United Eye Versatile Defender Josip Stanisic
Manchester United spent the summer ripping up their midfield at Michael Carrick’s request. Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba walked through the door. A late push for Louis Page collapsed. The engine room got its reset. The backline did not.
That feels deliberate. Last year, the co-owners poured their energy into the attack. This year, the middle of the pitch. By that logic, next summer is already being framed as the window when the defence comes under the microscope.
Carrick wanted defensive reinforcements now. United, wary of overspending and with INEOS tightening the brief, chose to hold back. Almost every defender in the squad is effectively playing for his future, and history tells you Old Trafford tends to fall for players who can cover more than one role.
Which is where Josip Stanisic comes in.
United track Bayern’s Mr Versatile
United are keeping a close eye on the Bayern Munich defender, who has quietly become one of the most adaptable operators in European football.
Stanisic is listed as a right-back. That barely tells the story. The 26-year-old Croatia international has operated across the entire backline, using his two-footed comfort to plug gaps wherever Bayern need him.
Last season he racked up 43 appearances in all competitions: 26 at right-back, 15 at left-back, and two in the centre of defence. For a club trying to rebuild a back four without knowing exactly who survives the clear-out, that kind of flexibility is gold.
It is no surprise, then, that United are not alone.
Heavyweight queue for Stanisic
According to Fussballdaten, United are one of several European giants monitoring Stanisic’s situation.
PSG, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Liverpool are all in the conversation. Any club looking for a defender who can cover right-back and centre-back at Champions League level has him circled in red.
The problem is Bayern know exactly what they have.
Stanisic is under contract at the Allianz Arena until 2029. That long deal hands the Bundesliga champions all the leverage they need. Reports suggest Bayern will only even listen if bids land in the region of £47 million to £56 million, with figures of €55 to €65 million mentioned as the threshold just to start talking.
On top of that, the German champions are expected to push for chunky performance-related bonuses and a sell-on clause in any package. They want today’s fee and tomorrow’s upside.
From a pure financial standpoint, United should be able to reach that level. The question is whether they will – and whether Stanisic wants to leave a club where he is now a regular part of the rotation.
Fit for United, but does the policy fit him?
From a squad-building angle, the move makes sense. United are searching for depth at right-back and centre-back. They value players who already know the demands of top-level European football. Stanisic ticks both boxes, with extensive Bundesliga and European Cup experience behind him.
There is, however, a snag. INEOS have placed a strong emphasis on recruiting players proven in the Premier League. Stanisic is proven, but not in England. That internal filter could complicate any attempt to turn interest into a formal bid.
So United watch, wait and plan their defensive overhaul, knowing that one of the most coveted, versatile defenders in Europe might be available – for a price. The only real unknown now is whether Old Trafford will decide he is the cornerstone worth bending their new rules for.
