Manchester United Nears Ederson Signing for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United are closing in on their first major midfield signing of the summer, with Atalanta’s Ederson now on the brink of a move to Old Trafford.

The deal is not over the line yet. But the direction of travel is clear.

Ederson says yes, United line up five-year deal

United, fresh from clinching a return to the Champions League for the first time in three years, have moved quickly. The transfer window does not officially open until June 15, yet the club’s new INEOS-led hierarchy has already pushed the Ederson move to an advanced stage.

Reports in England this week claimed a £38m fee had been agreed with Atalanta. That figure looks premature. According to Fabrizio Romano, United and the Serie A club are still ironing out the final details, with the fee expected to be around €45m.

On his YouTube channel, Romano outlined the state of play. The agreement with the player is done. Ederson has given the green light to a five-year contract and has made his preference clear despite interest from other clubs. He is waiting for United.

The final hurdle lies between the clubs. Payment structure, instalments, the fine print that can drag a transfer on for days. United’s approval at board level is still needed, but the move has been worked on “for weeks” and is now described as “very, very, very close” to completion.

For a player labelled “world-class” in some quarters, it would be a significant early marker from INEOS.

Midfield rebuild gathers pace

United’s return to Europe’s elite comes with scars. The last time they were in the Champions League in the old format, they crashed out in the group stage. That failure still lingers and shapes the urgency around this window.

A third-place finish in the Premier League has restored some pride, placing them as the best of the rest behind Manchester City and Arsenal. The reward is a heavier schedule, more pressure, and the need for a deeper, more robust squad.

Central midfield has been ringed in red on the recruitment board. Ederson is viewed as a key piece, but not the only one. Even if this deal goes through, United are expected to keep hunting in that area.

Ederson is not seen as the like-for-like, top-tier replacement for Casemiro that the club ultimately want. That search continues.

Tonali, Tchouameni and a crowded shortlist

The list of names linked with United’s midfield rebuild underlines the scale of the project.

Sandro Tonali has emerged as a major target. Reports from Italy in recent days suggest Michael Carrick pushed internally for the Newcastle United midfielder even before the Ederson move gathered pace, such is his determination to bring the Italy international to Old Trafford this summer. Separate Italian reports claim United are also close to an agreement for the 26-year-old, who has moved towards the top of their shortlist.

Above all of them, though, sits a dream name: Aurelien Tchouameni. Romano has confirmed the Real Madrid midfielder as United’s ideal signing in the middle of the pitch. Whether that dream survives contact with reality is another matter. Tchouameni’s future at the Bernabeu remains uncertain from the outside, complicated by a high-profile bust-up with teammate Federico Valverde – himself mentioned as another United target – but there is no clarity yet on Madrid’s willingness to sell.

Carrick’s preferred option, according to GIVEMESPORT sources, is closer to home. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is said to be his number one target. The problem? The England midfielder looks more likely to head across town to Manchester City instead, a potential blow to United’s plans and a sharp reminder of the new competitive landscape in their own city.

Another name in the frame is Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United. Relegation to the Championship has put the London club in a vulnerable position and Fernandes is expected to move on, with United among those monitoring his situation.

A new core, or another missed chance?

The pattern is unmistakable. INEOS want to reshape United’s midfield, not just tweak it. Ederson is close. Tonali is being chased. Tchouameni is admired. Anderson and Fernandes sit in the wider orbit.

The question now is whether United can convert these pursuits into a coherent new core, or whether this summer becomes another chapter of near-misses and almost-deals.

Ederson’s signature would be a strong start. What follows will decide whether United simply return to the Champions League – or arrive there ready to stay.
