Manchester United Pursues David Raum as Left-Back Alternative
Manchester United’s search for a left-back has taken a fresh twist, with David Raum now firmly on their radar as an alternative to Lewis Hall.
United have already thrown close to £150m at their midfield rebuild this summer, bringing in Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. The centre of the pitch looks refreshed. Other areas do not.
Left-back, in particular, remains a problem.
Luke Shaw’s injury record means Erik ten Hag cannot build a season around him, and the club’s preferred solution, Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, is effectively off the table for this window despite the player’s openness to the move. With time running down, United have been forced to widen the net.
Raum on the shortlist – but doubts remain
According to BILD, relayed by Sport Witness, RB Leipzig defender David Raum has made United’s left-back shortlist. The 28-year-old comes off a strong Bundesliga campaign, registering ten goal involvements last season, and is entering the final year of his contract.
Raum has already acknowledged the situation publicly.
“I’m now heading into the final year of my contract,” he said earlier this week. “I don’t need to lie about the fact that inquiries are coming in – that’s obviously to be expected. But as things stand, I’m looking forward to the season with Leipzig.”
Leipzig are understood to be seeking around €40m for the Germany international, but with his deal running down, there is an acceptance they may have to sell for less. That should, in theory, tempt a club like United.
Yet this is where the hesitation creeps in.
The report claims United are “dithering” over committing a relatively large fee to a 28-year-old, weighing up whether to go for a younger option with greater resale value and development upside. The need is urgent; the decision is not.
Romano: United “can guarantee” a left-back push
Despite the internal debate, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano insists United will not leave the position untouched.
“I think it could be busy for Man Utd in this final four or five days of the window because I can guarantee to you that Manchester United are still looking for a solution at left-back,” he said on his YouTube channel.
“So Man Utd are working to sign a new left-back. I would not be surprised if they end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee. So maybe not a superstar name like Balde because they considered Balde. They had a call with Jorge Mendes one week ago, but the deal is too expensive.
“Transfer fee, salary, too expensive. United are not going to do that, at least for now. Then if they change I will let you know. But, just as a comparison, you remember when Man Utd signed Sergio Reguilon from I think it was Tottenham on loan, something similar.
“Obviously I’m not saying Reguilon but that kind of player, experienced left-back who can provide competition, who can also be an international profile.
“So Manchester United are exploring this kind of options. So left-back is expected to be an area where Man Utd want to improve before the deadline. I expect them to sign there.”
So the picture is clear enough. Raum is on the list. The fee, age profile and contract situation all sit on the negotiating scales. United want reliability without breaking their reshaped budget, experience without blocking the path for a longer-term solution.
The clock is ticking. Whether that pressure pushes them towards Raum or another “guarantee” option will say plenty about how boldly this new United hierarchy is prepared to act.
