Manchester United's Contract Talks with Bruno Fernandes Amid Interest

Manchester United have begun preliminary talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract, a clear signal that the club intend to build their new era around their captain rather than risk another summer of speculation.

United, according to Football Insider, are determined to secure the long-term future of the Portuguese playmaker after months of noise around his position and potential exit from the Premier League. The plan is twofold: negotiate fresh terms while also preparing to activate the one-year extension clause already written into his current deal.

That safety net matters. Fernandes has around 10 months left on his existing £220,000-a-week contract, but United hold the option to push that agreement out by another year. Triggering it would buy the club time and preserve leverage over his market value, ensuring he does not drift into the final stretch of his deal with suitors circling and the power balance shifting away from Old Trafford.

Yet the message from inside United is that the extension clause alone is not enough. The hierarchy want a full, formal agreement in place before the end of the calendar year, to shut down the rumours and reassert that their captain is not for sale.

Fernandes is doing his part on the pitch to strengthen that case. At the weekend he delivered another statement performance, smashing a hat-trick and laying on an assist in a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town. It came just days after he was named PFA Player of the Year, a personal accolade that underlined what United already know: their most decisive player is also their most wanted.

The urgency around a new deal has been sharpened by serious interest from abroad. Galatasaray have emerged as a major contender for his signature, with reports suggesting the Turkish champions are ready to put a four-year contract on the table that would effectively double his current wages.

From Istanbul, the package looks persuasive. A proposed £3.5 million signing-on fee sits alongside that salary hike, a lucrative offer for a veteran playmaker entering the final stretch of his elite career and one that would test the resolve of most clubs and players.

This is not the first time Fernandes has stood at a crossroads. Last summer, he came close to a move to the Saudi Pro League. His agent, Miguel Pinho, held high-level talks in Riyadh with Al-Hilal, who were prepared to offer a staggering £200 million over three years. The move never materialised, but it underlined the scale of interest in a player whose numbers place him among the most productive midfielders of his generation.

Since arriving from Sporting CP in January 2020, Fernandes has become the heartbeat of Manchester United. He has racked up 110 goals and 109 assists in 329 appearances, output that would be remarkable for a centre-forward, let alone a midfielder. Last season he set a new Premier League record with 21 assists, another milestone in a career built on risk, vision and relentless end product.

Inside the dressing room and on the pitch, he understands exactly what is being asked of him. Fernandes has spoken in the past about the demands at Old Trafford and the standards expected of anyone wearing the armband. His performances rarely drift far from that bar.

Now comes the next phase. Under Michael Carrick’s leadership, United are trying to shape a new tactical identity, and Fernandes sits at the core of it. His creativity, work rate and ability to decide games in moments of chaos make him the natural reference point for the rebuild.

To reflect that status, United are thought to be ready to elevate him to the top of their wage bill. The club are reportedly willing to make Fernandes their highest-paid player, with a new weekly salary in the region of £350,000 and an additional year on his deal.

The numbers tell their own story. So does the intent. United know that if they hesitate, Galatasaray and others will not.
