Manchester United Prepares for £80m Midfield Battle

Manchester United’s new era under Michael Carrick is starting to take shape – and it will not come cheap.

With plans already in motion to reshape the squad before their Champions League return next season, United are preparing to spend big again, with their next major target expected to cost around £80million. That is the figure they are likely to have to meet if they want to see off rival interest and land their preferred option.

Carrick’s focus is clear: fix the heart of the team.

Casemiro’s exit has torn a sizeable hole in United’s midfield. His departure removes experience, presence and a defensive shield that, for all its inconsistencies, still anchored the side. United have moved quickly to address that, with a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson reportedly agreed, and another midfield addition already being worked on behind the scenes.

One reinforcement is not enough. Carrick wants a new core, not a patch-up job.

The club’s recruitment team are pushing ahead with plans for a second arrival in the engine room, aware that the demands of domestic competition and Champions League football will expose any lack of depth. United cannot afford another season spent juggling tired legs and tactical compromises.

While the transfer machine whirs in the background, one of United’s most high-profile figures is facing a very different kind of summer.

Harry Maguire, once a nailed-on England starter, will again watch a major tournament from the outside. The 33-year-old has been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man World Cup squad, the second straight international showpiece he has missed after injury ruled him out of Euro 2024.

This time, though, Maguire will not be disappearing from view.

According to The Athletic, the United defender is set to appear on The Rest is Football podcast during the tournament, joining a roster of guests lined up to dissect the action. The show, fronted by Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, will broadcast 40 episodes from a studio overlooking New York’s Times Square.

It is a striking image: while United chase an £80m midfielder to power their Champions League return, their former defensive linchpin prepares to swap the pressure of the back line for the comfort of a studio chair.

Carrick’s rebuild is accelerating. Maguire’s next chapter, at least for now, will be told into a microphone rather than from the centre of United’s defence.
