John Morling Resigns as Technical Director of HKFA

John Morling’s abrupt exit has rocked Hong Kong football.

The Englishman has resigned as technical director of The Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) to take up a new role in the United Arab Emirates, just months after putting pen to paper on a fresh two-year deal.

His departure rips out a key pillar of the HKFA’s recent restructuring work. During Morling’s tenure, Hong Kong launched an under-22 Premier League, a significant step in trying to bridge the gap between youth and senior football. The city also hosted its first AFC Pro Licence Diploma, a landmark moment for local coaching education, while age-group representative sides began to look sharper and more competitive thanks to a revamped games programme.

The progress in the pathways never quite translated into the flagship side. The senior team failed to qualify for next year’s Asian Cup finals, a blow that ultimately cost former head coach Ashley Westwood his job and underlined how far Hong Kong still has to climb.

Morling played a central role in the six-month search that followed. He was heavily involved in the recruitment process that ended in June with Roberto Losada being appointed as Westwood’s successor, a hire seen as crucial to stabilising the national team project.

Now the architect of that process is on his way out. Morling is currently serving his notice period, and there is no clarity yet on when he will work his final day at the HKFA.

His next destination underlines the scale of the challenge he is walking into. The UAE is pushing hard on an ambitious football project built around ending a four-decade wait to return to the World Cup finals. Morling will be part of that drive, swapping a developing Hong Kong structure for a country intent on fast-tracking its way back onto the global stage.

The HKFA has been asked to comment on his resignation and the search for a replacement, with pressing questions now hanging over who will steer Hong Kong’s technical direction at a critical moment for the game in the city.
