Manchester United's 25-Man Premier League Squad Confirmed

Manchester United have locked in their 25-man senior squad for the 2026-27 Premier League season – and one big name missing from the official list immediately caught the eye.

Under league rules, clubs can register no more than 25 senior players, with a cap of 17 who do not qualify as ‘homegrown’. To earn that status, a player must have been registered with a club in England or Wales for three full seasons before turning 21.

United have hit the numbers cleanly. Eight homegrown players make the cut, a group headlined by Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount. Around them, Michael Carrick has filled out his senior group with 15 non-homegrown players, giving him a full complement of 25.

Then came the surprise.

No Kobbie Mainoo.

Given the midfielder’s rise and his late-season importance under Carrick, his absence from the official squad list raised immediate questions. This is a player who spent the first half of last season on the fringes under Ruben Amorim, only to be brought back into the heart of the side once Carrick took over. To see his name missing felt jarring.

The reality is far more straightforward than the initial shock suggests.

There is no snub. No hidden injury. No transfer twist.

Mainoo was born after the start of 2005, which makes him an Under-21 player by Premier League definition this season. Players in that category do not need to be registered in the 25-man senior squad at all. They are automatically eligible to play in the league.

So Mainoo can feature whenever Carrick chooses. He is simply protected by the rules rather than squeezed out by them.

The same applies to Leny Yoro. The defender turns 21 in November, but for this campaign he still falls under the Under-21 umbrella. His omission from the senior list is purely administrative and has no bearing on his availability.

Behind those headline names, United’s youth depth is quietly stacking up.

A cluster of talented youngsters sit on the U-21 list, each with a different route – and timescale – to the first team. Ayden Heaven, Tyler Fletcher, Shea Lacey, Harry Amass and summer signing Tynan Thompson are all officially U-21 players and all eligible for selection in the Premier League without taking up a senior slot.

Supporters inside Old Trafford will also keep a close eye on Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, who is edging towards a potential step up. New arrival Cristian Orozco joins him as another highly regarded prospect, already generating intrigue around Carrick’s longer-term plans.

There is a family thread running through the academy picture as well.

Kai Rooney, son of club legend Wayne Rooney, is now classified as an U-21 player for the first time after becoming a first-year scholar over the summer. On the same ladder, Carrick’s own son, Jacey, has entered the apprenticeship programme, adding another layer of interest to the club’s youth setup.

United’s senior list might be capped at 25.

The conveyor belt behind it is anything but.
