Manchester City Targets Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández for Record Transfer
Manchester City are preparing an opening bid for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández in a move that would detonate the final days of the transfer window, according to BBC Sport.
Chelsea have set a starting price of at least £120m for the 25-year-old Argentina international. That figure would make Fernández the second-most expensive signing in Premier League history, behind only Alexander Isak’s £125m switch to Liverpool.
For Enzo Maresca, this is not just another big-name chase. It is the cornerstone of his rebuild.
Maresca’s missing piece
City’s new manager has identified Fernández as the player to anchor and reshape his midfield after a summer of upheaval. Maresca’s relationship with the Argentine has remained strong since his own controversial Chelsea departure on New Year’s Day, months before he walked into the Etihad dugout in June.
Now he wants to reunite.
If City meet Chelsea’s demands, they will smash their transfer record for the second time in the same window. They have already laid down one marker by paying £116m to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Landing Fernández would push that bar even higher and send a clear message across England and Europe.
The intent matches the scale of the exodus.
Midfield ripped out
City have lost four major midfielders in one summer, a core ripped straight from the heart of the team. Tijjani Reijnders has gone to Al-Qadsiah for £52m. Rodri, the metronome of their recent dominance, has joined Barcelona for £65m. Nico Gonzalez has moved to Newcastle for £52m, and Bernardo Silva has finally completed his long-mooted switch to Real Madrid.
Those exits have left Maresca with gaps, not just in numbers but in personality and control. Fernández, with his blend of aggression, passing range and press resistance, is seen as the player to stitch the whole thing back together.
City are moving aggressively because they have to.
Chelsea tension and a turning point
On the other side of the deal, Chelsea find themselves juggling tension, timing and a huge financial decision.
Relations between Fernández and the club deteriorated after their Champions League exit to PSG in March. The midfielder publicly voiced his frustration in the aftermath, a rare open crack in the dressing-room facade at Stamford Bridge.
Fernández, signed from Benfica for £107m in 2023, then explored a possible move to Real Madrid with his agent Javier Pastore. Madrid publicly distanced themselves from the speculation, closing that door, at least for now.
New Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso stepped in during July, holding private talks with Fernández in an attempt to steady the situation. Alonso has refused to reveal what was discussed, or whether those conversations actually calmed the waters.
The stand-off never fully disappeared. Now City are testing how far Chelsea are prepared to go to keep him.
High stakes on both sides
If Chelsea choose to cash in, Fernández would become their most high-profile departure since Eden Hazard left for Real Madrid in 2019. The scale of the fee, and the symbolism of losing a marquee midfielder so soon after his arrival, would reverberate across the league.
Alonso, though, must keep his squad locked in on the pitch. Chelsea face critical league fixtures in the coming weeks, and losing a key figure at the end of the window could destabilise a group still adjusting to a new manager and a new style.
City’s situation is just as urgent, but for different reasons. Maresca needs a statement signing to underpin his tactical ideas and to convince supporters that the club can maintain, and then restore, its dominance at home and in Europe after such a brutal midfield overhaul.
The clock is already ticking. City face a race against time to formalise an offer before next week’s deadline.
