Manchester City Sign Germany Full-Back Carlotta Wamser
Manchester City have moved to reinforce both flanks with the signing of Germany full-back Carlotta Wamser on a four-year deal from Bayer Leverkusen.
The 22-year-old, comfortable at either left-back or right-back, becomes City’s third major arrival of the summer, following defender Niamh Charles from Chelsea and forward Beth Mead from Arsenal. It is a clear statement from the WSL champions: the rebuild is happening at pace, and it is happening now.
Wamser only joined Leverkusen in July 2025, arriving on a free from Eintracht Frankfurt, but her rise has been rapid. She has already collected 14 senior caps for Germany, having come through every rung of the national youth ladder and lifting the Under-17 European Championship title in 2019. That grounding has shaped a defender who reads the game early and relishes the one‑v‑one duel.
Her move comes at a crucial moment for City. Charles, signed to be a cornerstone of the back line, is already on an injury list that also includes Grace Clinton, Vivianne Miedema, Jade Rose and Laura Wienroither. With the champions beginning their title defence at home to Birmingham City on Sunday, depth in wide defensive areas was sliding from concern towards problem. Wamser changes that picture.
The German spoke with the composure of someone who knows exactly why she is here.
“I had a perfect welcome here and I already feel very good here and I look forward to my time here in Manchester,” she said, outlining both comfort and ambition in one breath. “The English league is the best league in the world and Manchester City is one of the best clubs in the world.
“I feel like I need the next step for my career and I feel that I can develop as a player here. And I like the challenge as well, so I think it’s the perfect step for me right now.”
Inside the club, there is a sense they have secured a long-term piece of their defensive puzzle. Director of football Therese Sjogran made no attempt to hide City’s admiration.
“We are delighted to welcome Carlotta to the club,” she said. “She is a player we’ve admired for some time and know she will bring energy, passion and a willingness to learn to the team.
“For such a young, exciting talent to trust us with the next step of her career is something we feel conveys a strong message of what we are building here.”
City’s back line has just gained a versatile, international-level full-back with years of development still ahead of her. As the champions step out to begin another title defence, the real intrigue now is how quickly Wamser turns from new signing into a fixture in sky blue.
