Manchester City Sign Young Midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi for €100 Million
Manchester City have won the race for one of the brightest young midfielders in world football, striking a huge deal with Lille for 18-year-old Moroccan star Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The Premier League champions have agreed a package worth €100 million ($116.9m), with City paying an initial €95m ($111m) and a further €5m ($5.9m) in potential add-ons. For a teenager, it is a statement fee. For City, it is the cornerstone of a midfield rebuild that has suddenly become urgent.
City move fast to beat Liverpool and Europe’s elite
Bouaddi had already turned heads at this year’s World Cup, where his composure and authority in Morocco’s midfield pushed him onto the radar of Europe’s biggest clubs. Liverpool were among those heavily linked earlier in the summer, with several sides monitoring his situation as Lille tried to hold their nerve.
They couldn’t hold it forever.
Lille had hoped to keep Bouaddi for at least one more season, demanding a substantial fee to even consider a sale. City met that demand late in the window, closing a deal that shifts the balance of the market and closes the door on Liverpool’s interest in the short term.
The teenager arrives with heavyweight endorsements. Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, speaking on The Rest Is Football during the World Cup, was emphatic in his assessment.
“Really impressive — he’s only 18, but he plays like a 30-year-old,” Vieira said, praising Bouaddi’s tactical intelligence, positioning and personality. “He’s got the technical ability to play out from the back and a really strong personality. I quite like the midfield three from Morocco, but of course, he’s the talent in this team.”
City clearly agree.
Rebuilding the engine room
This is not just another prospect signing. Bouaddi is being brought in to help fill the void left by Rodri’s departure and the exit of Bernardo Silva, two pillars of the Guardiola era.
City have already shattered their club transfer record this summer to land Elliot Anderson for £116m ($158.2m). Bouaddi now follows as the next major piece of a new-look midfield, underlining the scale of the transition facing new head coach Enzo Maresca.
A five-year contract with an option for a further year shows exactly how central City view Bouaddi to their long-term plans. At 18, he is being trusted not just as a project, but as a player capable of growing into the heart of a side that expects to compete for every trophy, every season.
And City are not done yet.
Maresca’s wish list still active
Tijjani Reijnders left the club in the past week, adding another gap for City to plug in the centre of the pitch. The hierarchy remain determined to replace every key departure, backing Maresca as he steps into the daunting role of succeeding Pep Guardiola.
City are pushing for at least one more midfielder before the window slams shut. Their primary target is Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, but prising him out of Stamford Bridge will be anything but straightforward. Chelsea are not expected to even consider offers below $130m, and they know exactly how desperate top clubs are for elite midfielders.
Roma’s Manu Kone is also under serious consideration, with City working deep into deadline day to assemble the squad Maresca believes he needs.
Bouaddi’s arrival answers one big question. The next few days will reveal whether City can complete the rest of their midfield puzzle — and whether an 18-year-old from Morocco is about to become the face of a new era at the Etihad.
