Manchester City Eyes Enzo Fernández Amidst Chelsea's High Valuation

Manchester City’s interest in Enzo Fernández is still burning – but prising him away from Chelsea is set to be a brutal negotiation.

Rodri’s completed move from City to Barcelona has dragged the Fernández saga back into the spotlight. City have tracked the Argentina international all summer as they look to rebuild the heart of their midfield, and, according to reporter Ben Jacobs, they are now “prepared to bid” for the Chelsea man as part of a plan to bring in two new midfielders before the window shuts.

The problem is the price.

Chelsea have already made their stance clear. A £120 million valuation scared City off earlier in the window, and the London club even floated a “deadline” for offers last Friday. That marker has come and gone. The interest from the Premier League champions has not.

Now the dynamics have shifted. Chelsea know that if they sell, they will be the ones scrambling for a replacement in the final days of the market. That means paying a premium. And they will expect City to fund that premium in full.

So while Chelsea would listen to a huge offer, the figure on the table now is likely to be even higher than the £120m previously quoted. Any bid City make will not just have to match that number, it may have to smash through it.

This is the reality of late-window brinkmanship. City need midfield quality after losing their anchor. Chelsea, under no pressure to sell, can push the price into uncomfortable territory and see how badly the champions really want Fernández.

One way or another, this stand-off has the feel of a deal that could ignite the final days of the transfer window.
