Man City vs Coventry: Enzo Fernandez Set for Etihad Debut
Manchester City have thrown money at the squad. Now Enzo Maresca has to turn the chaos of Deadline Day into something coherent.
No more caveats, no more soft landings. Coventry arrive at the Etihad on Saturday, and City’s new era starts for real.
Fernandez at the Heart of It
Enzo Fernandez is the statement signing. The £125m midfielder, signed for a British transfer record-equalling fee, has not come to sit and watch. He is expected to walk straight into the starting XI and immediately reshape the centre of the pitch.
His arrival effectively ends Marc Guehi’s brief stint as an emergency defensive midfielder. That experiment served a purpose, but with Fernandez available, City can restore a more natural balance. Elliot Anderson is the likely partner, offering legs and industry alongside Fernandez’s control and range of passing.
Once that pivot settles, the knock-on effect is clear: the attacking midfielders are under pressure.
Rayan Cherki has started the season brightly. Phil Foden remains the homegrown star around whom City still want to build. But with this level of investment, reputation alone does not guarantee a starting shirt. Maresca finally has what he wanted: real competition in the final third, and the power to leave big names out.
Big Fees, Big Decisions
Iliman Ndiaye, brought in for up to £65m, is the obvious early casualty of that depth. He may have to watch the opening whistle from the bench. Ayyoub Bouaddi, signed for £86m, is in the same boat. When a club spends at this scale, the squad fills up fast and patience becomes part of the job description.
Fernandez, though, is different. He changes the geometry of the team. With him anchoring and dictating, City can push their creative players higher, closer to Erling Haaland, and look less stretched in transition.
Defence Finally Taking Shape
At the back, the constant chopping and changing that marked the early weeks of the campaign looks to be easing.
Abdukodir Khusanov is set to start on the right of the defence, with Ruben Dias and Guehi forming a more orthodox central pairing. Josko Gvardiol should continue on the left, giving City a settled back four at last.
That stability matters. Coventry will arrive at the Etihad knowing they must be ruthless with any uncertainty. A back line that knows its roles and relationships gives City a base to build from, rather than another afternoon of improvisation.
Injury Picture and Predicted XI
Matheus Nunes remains a doubt as he battles for full fitness. Jeremy Doku is still out, sidelined by the calf injury he picked up against Arsenal in the Community Shield.
So Maresca’s likely hand looks like this:
Predicted Man City XI vs Coventry
Donnarumma; Khusanov, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol; Anderson, Fernandez; Semenyo, Cherki, Foden; Haaland.
Kick-off is at 3pm BST on Saturday, September 2, 2026, at the Etihad Stadium.
City have spent enough to reshape a squad in one window. Now comes the real test: can all that money buy control, authority and, against Coventry, the only currency that matters – three points?
