Mamelodi Sundowns vs Marumo Gallants: A Clash of Champions

Mamelodi Sundowns walk into this one unbeaten, African champions with a target on their backs, and yet with just enough defensive wobble to give Marumo Gallants a sliver of hope.

Gallants, though, arrive with their own problems.

Sundowns: Goals flowing, cracks showing

Sundowns have not tasted defeat this season, but the clean, controlled dominance usually associated with them has frayed a little. Five goals conceded in their last three competitive matches tells its own story. They are still hard to beat. Just not as watertight.

Miguel Cardoso has options, even if some come with caveats.

Teboho Mokoena has been managing an injury since the MTN8 quarter-final win over Polokwane City and sat out the clash with Kaizer Chiefs. His inclusion in the predicted XI is a major talking point: if he’s fit enough to start, Sundowns gain their metronome in midfield; if not, Cardoso must reshuffle.

New signing Siyanda Ndlovu is pushing hard. He has shaken off a minor niggle and came off the bench against Chiefs, doing enough to put himself firmly in line for a first start. Cassius Mailula is in the same conversation for different reasons. Twice off the bench, twice on the scoresheet in Sundowns’ last two outings. Impact player, yes. But his form is now screaming for a place in the XI.

A possible Sundowns line-up underlines their depth: Ronwen Williams; Khuliso Mudau, Thapelo Johannes, Mothobi Mvala Kekana, Neo Basadien; Mokoena, Marcelo Allende, Devin van Wyk; Ndlovu, Sphelele Mkhulise; Mailula. It is a side built to dominate the ball, push full-backs high, and suffocate opponents in their own half.

They have history on their side too. In league meetings, Sundowns have never lost to Gallants: 10 wins, five draws. The most recent league clash ended 3-1 to The Brazilians on 17 March 2026. The pattern is clear.

Yet there’s a twist. Gallants can cling to last season’s Carling Knockout Cup shock, when they held Sundowns to 0-0 after extra time and then edged them 7-6 on penalties on 5 October 2025. They know what it feels like to stand toe-to-toe and survive.

Gallants: New coach, old fears

Life under new head coach Phuti Mohafe has started the hard way. One point from two matches, and that single point came against newly promoted Kruger United. The shadows of last season’s relegation battle are already creeping back into view.

The numbers do not flatter them. Gallants’ form reads: L D D D D. No wins, just a grinding run of stalemates and setbacks. The one positive? They are finally off the mark in front of goal. Thapelo Dhludhlu’s late consolation in a 3-1 defeat to Stellenbosch at least snapped the early-season drought.

Discipline and squad issues have not helped. Monnapule Saleng remains frozen out of the first-team picture due to disciplinary problems, depriving Mohafe of one of his more dangerous attacking options. Keanu Cupido and Arthur Sales have yet to feature in a matchday squad this season, with no clear return dates. It leaves Gallants short of experience and variety in key areas.

Still, Cardoso is not buying any narrative of an easy night.

“First of all, Marumo had and has players that are very interesting,” he said. “Second, it’s true, the coach in the past made life difficult for Sundowns.”

That coach is now Mohafe, and he will likely lean on a settled core: Washington Mlambo; Tebogo Ntiya-Ntiya, Sibusiso Sikakane, Tshepo Rikhotso, Sibusiso Lukhele; Luthuli, Kunene, Mabuza; Dhludhlu, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo, Sihlali.

It is a line-up designed to be compact, organised, and opportunistic. They know a draw against the African champions would be gold. They will absolutely take it if it’s on offer.

History, tension, and a familiar question

Sundowns’ recent form line – D W W D L – hints at a side still finding its ruthless rhythm, especially at the back. Gallants’ record shouts struggle, but with that Carling Knockout Cup scalp as a reminder that they can drag Sundowns into an arm-wrestle.

Gallants are chasing a first win of the season. Sundowns are chasing control of the small details that separate champions from merely good teams.

One side fighting to stay out of trouble. The other fighting to stay untouchable.

Which fight will define the night?
