Mamelodi Sundowns Triumph 2-1 Over Golden Arrows in Dramatic Finish

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso hailed his players’ resilience after they snatched a dramatic 2-1 win over Golden Arrows in a breathless Betway Premiership clash at King Zwelithini Stadium.

For long spells it looked like two points dropped. Then Teboho Mokoena stepped up.

With two minutes left on the clock and the game finely poised, Mokoena collected the ball on the edge of the area and rifled it home, a thumping finish that settled a frantic contest and kept Sundowns’ perfect league start intact.

Late drama after fast Sundowns start

Sundowns had set the tone early. New signing Siyanda Ndlovu marked his appearance with a first-half goal, putting the Brazilians in front and underlining why the club moved for him. They controlled large parts of the opening period, but Arrows refused to fold.

The hosts grew into the game after the break and found their reward when Junior Dion levelled in the second half, tilting the momentum and testing Sundowns’ temperament. Suddenly, the leaders were under pressure, their composure under scrutiny in a hostile away setting.

They held their nerve. And then they struck.

Mokoena’s late winner not only killed off Arrows’ fightback, it pushed Sundowns to 16 points from six matches, three clear of Orlando Pirates at the top. Pirates, though, still have a game in hand, keeping the title race tight even at this early stage.

Cardoso salutes attitude – and issues a warning

Cardoso’s post-match reaction mixed pride with a pointed reminder of the standards he expects.

“I’m obviously happy with the character we’ve shown because sometimes if you concede a goal like that, you don’t have the mental capacity to be resilient and to fight for something,” he said.

“So it means that the message, the character and attitude we’re trying to build is strong. No one can destroy the attitude and that is something that we have to state all the time.

“It will not obviously happen every time that we score in the last minute but if we believe, it will happen more frequently and the team showed belief.”

The belief is clear. So is the work still to be done.

Cardoso bristled at how his side handled the closing stages after Mokoena’s strike, unhappy with the way Sundowns continued to pour forward instead of seeing out the result with control.

“What I didn’t like is that after we scored the two one we still went to go attack like it was the last minute of the match and we were losing by two goals,” he said.

“But we needed to have the maturity at that point to manage the game and keep the ball in the right places to finish the game in the few minutes that were remaining. There’s obviously some learning to do from this match so that we can become stronger in the future.”

Focus shifts to Loftus test

The schedule offers no breathing space. Sundowns are back on the pitch on Wednesday at Loftus Versfeld against Siwelele FC, riding a four-match winning streak across all competitions and carrying the weight of early-season expectation.

Top of the table, grinding out late winners, and still being pushed by their coach to grow up in the pressure moments – Sundowns look strong. The question now is whether this blend of grit and ambition can carry them through a long campaign where every lapse in “maturity”, as Cardoso calls it, could yet prove costly.
