Malang Sarr Departs RC Lens Amidst Team Dismantling
The dismantling of RC Lens’ recent success shows no sign of slowing. Another pillar has gone.
Malang Sarr became the latest to walk away from the Stade Bollaert project on Tuesday, as Lens confirmed his departure at the end of his contract, which expires on 30 June. No transfer fee, no extension. Just another key figure heading for the exit.
He follows captain Adrien Thomasson, who left on a free to join Stade Rennais. Allan Saint-Maximin has also moved on after his short-term deal ran its course. And the biggest loss of all came on the touchline: Pierre Sage, the coach who delivered a Coupe de France title and a second-place finish in Ligue 1 in a single season, has swapped the north of France for the Premier League and Crystal Palace.
Each departure strips away another layer of the side that had reignited the Bollaert.
Sarr’s story at Lens had been one of revival. After his Chelsea contract was mutually terminated, the former OGC Nice defender arrived ahead of the 2024/25 season needing a reset, a proper home, and regular football. He found all three in the Sang et Or shirt.
On the pitch, he did far more than just fill a gap. Last season alone he racked up 39 appearances in all competitions, anchoring the back line and playing a central role in the club’s charge to silverware and a top-two league finish. His blend of experience, mobility, and left-footed balance at the back became a quiet constant in a team that often played on the edge.
By the time his contract ran down, Sarr had amassed 62 games for Lens. Not a lifetime, but enough to leave a mark in an era that will be remembered fondly by supporters, even as it unravels piece by piece.
Now, at 27, he steps back into the market as a free agent, carrying the weight of a rebuilt reputation and the freedom to choose his next move.
Lens, meanwhile, must answer a harsher question: how many more departures can this project absorb before the team that thrilled the Bollaert becomes unrecognisable?
