Mahmoud Saber Lights Up Seattle with Early Goal for Egypt

Mahmoud Saber needed only five minutes to light up Seattle.

With Egypt already assured of a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout rounds, the tension belonged more to Iran, but the early drama came from the North Africans. Saber burst through and slipped a low effort between the legs of goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, a finish full of composure that left the Iran No. 1 sprawling and Egypt 1-0 up in this Group G clash on Friday.

It was a goal that carried a sense of freedom. Egypt, playing a World Cup group stage with the rare luxury of having qualification already secured, looked loose, confident, aware they are living only the second knockout qualification in the country’s history on this stage. The early strike felt like a statement that they had no intention of easing off.

Iran, though, did not buckle.

The response came quickly, and it came with authority. In the 14th minute, Ramin Rezaeian stepped up to drag his side back into the contest, finding the net to level the match at 1-1. The equaliser punctured any notion that this would be a procession for Egypt and underlined what was at stake for an Iran side fighting to extend their own tournament.

One early blow. One sharp reply. With the scores locked and the group picture still shifting, the real question now is which of these two can seize control of a night that refuses to settle.
