Lucas Herrington Completes Record Move to Hull City
Colorado Rapids defender Lucas Herrington has completed a club-record move to Premier League side Hull City, sealing one of the most eye-catching transfers in MLS history for a defender.
The 18-year-old Australian international leaves Colorado in a deal reportedly worth up to $23 million — $17 million guaranteed, with add-ons and a sell-on clause pushing the fee higher. No MLS defender has ever generated a bigger outbound fee.
From bargain buy to record sale
Herrington’s rise has been rapid and ruthless.
Colorado picked him up from A-League side Brisbane Roar FC on a pre-contract in August 2025, reportedly for under $1 million. A promising teenager, yes, but hardly a headline signing at the time.
Less than a year later, he’s an MLS All-Star, a World Cup defender, and the centerpiece of a record-breaking transfer to England.
On the field this season, the center back logged 20 games for the Rapids, contributing 1 goal and 1 assist while anchoring the back line. His form carried him onto the biggest stage: two appearances for the Socceroos at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Rapids president Pádraig Smith didn’t hold back in his assessment of the youngster as the deal was confirmed.
“Lucas is a special talent whose elite mentality and character match his outstanding ability on the field,” Smith said. He framed the transfer as a validation of the club’s strategy of identifying and developing young talent from all markets, calling Herrington “a wonderful example of that approach” and wishing him success at Hull City.
A teenager’s leap of faith
For Herrington, the move caps a whirlwind first year away from home.
“When I landed in Colorado in January, I had left Australia for the first time to come across the world and chase a dream. The Rapids and their fans took a chance on me and made me feel at home from day one,” he said.
He went on to thank his family, his teammates, head coach Matt Wells and Smith “for believing in me, supporting my growth and giving me the opportunity to take the next steps in my career.”
“To the fans: thank you for embracing a kid from Brisbane as one of your own,” Herrington added. “Colorado has given me so much, and I’ll always be proud to have been a Rapid. I’m excited for what comes next, but I’ll never forget my time here.”
Hull’s Premier League return gets a boost
Herrington now walks into a club riding a wave of momentum.
Hull City are back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-17 season, having earned promotion by beating Middlesbrough in the 2025-26 EFL Championship playoff final. Reinforcing the defense with a young, World Cup-tested center back fits the profile of a team trying to stay up, not just make up the numbers.
The size of the fee underlines Hull’s belief that Herrington can grow into a cornerstone of their back line in the top flight.
Rapids reset without their rising star
For Colorado, the deal is both a financial landmark and a sporting challenge.
They’re in their first season under head coach Matt Wells, the former Tottenham Hotspur assistant tasked with reshaping the club. Right now, the Rapids sit 11th in the Western Conference, two points off the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs line with 22 points.
