Liverpool's Transfer Scramble: Orozco Signs with Brighton
Liverpool’s transfer scramble is heading into the final stretch, and the picture is far from what many imagined at the start of the summer.
Back then, the expectation around Anfield was clear: five or six signings, a serious refresh, and a squad reshaped for the new era. Instead, with the window ticking towards its close, Liverpool look like a club still trying to work out how they even replace Mohamed Salah, never mind build around him.
Key players continue to be linked with the exit. Stefan Bajcetic has even been mentioned as a potential departure. Cody Gakpo is the biggest name in the rumour mill, but any move for the Dutchman feels impossible unless Richard Hughes lands at least a couple of forwards. Without fresh attackers through the door, Liverpool simply cannot afford to let him go.
The clock is loud now. Less than a week remains, and it feels like now or never for several deals that have been simmering all summer.
Orozco slips away
While the first team rightly dominates the headlines, Liverpool have quietly pushed hard on the academy front in recent years. Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha are the poster boys for that strategy – highly rated youngsters prised from other clubs and already nudging the first-team picture.
Anfield’s academy has long been regarded as one of the elite talent factories in world football, a place where the pathway to the senior side is real, not just a sales pitch. Recently, that route has felt more congested, especially under Arne Slot. Now, with Andoni Iraola in charge, there is a sense that the dial could shift again, with youth once more at the heart of the project.
But one target they had lined up for that future will not be walking through the doors at Kirkby.
“Matías Orozco (18) will be a new player for #Brighton. The deal closes for 4.8M$ + bonuses for 85% with Cali,” journalist Pipe Sierra reported on X. “The Colombian will travel tonight to Europe with his agent Leonardo Daza to complete the visa process, medical exams, and contract signing.”
Liverpool had tracked Orozco and held talks over the midfielder for some time. For much of the summer, they were effectively alone in the race. Now, as the window enters its decisive days, Brighton have stepped in and closed the deal.
A blow, and a reminder: even at academy level, Liverpool are not shopping alone anymore.
Academy plan needs a new name
Last season underlined how serious Liverpool are about strengthening their youth ranks. Mor Talla Ndiaye, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Samuel Martinez all arrived as part of a concerted push to deepen the talent pool beneath the first team.
Of that trio, Ndukwe has stood out most. Inside the club, there is frustration that he did not accumulate enough points to secure a UK work permit. That ruling forced Liverpool to send him on loan to Levante, a move designed to give him senior minutes and, they hope, open a route back to Anfield as early as January.
Orozco was supposed to be the next piece in that puzzle, another high-upside signing driven by Hughes’ recruitment team. Instead, Brighton will be the ones betting on his development.
So Liverpool go back to the list. Another midfielder, another wonderkid, another project to plug the gap Orozco was meant to fill.
The academy’s reputation remains strong, its pathway still attractive. But with the first team in flux and rivals circling the same young talents, the question is no longer whether Liverpool can develop stars.
It’s whether they can keep winning the race to sign them in the first place.
