Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham, Bruno Guimaraes has gone to Arsenal. Those exits strip Newcastle of guile and control in midfield, the very qualities that underpinned Howe’s best work.
Even so, St James’ Park remains a difficult place to visit, and Jaissle’s first competitive test is laced with opportunity. Liverpool under a new manager, away from home, still learning Iraola’s demands: it is exactly the sort of occasion where a fired-up Newcastle side can rattle a heavyweight still finding its rhythm.
Jaissle will know that. He may not have had much time, but he has enough talent at his disposal to turn this opener into a statement. The question is whether Newcastle can knit together quickly enough to exploit Liverpool’s transition, or whether Iraola’s new-look side will announce themselves with authority in one of the league’s most unforgiving arenas.
