Liverpool Trust 18-Year-Old Trey Nyoni After Curtis Jones Departure

Liverpool have decided the answer to Curtis Jones’ £30m departure to Inter Milan is not another big-name signing from abroad, but a teenager already walking through the doors at Kirkby.

Trey Nyoni, just 18, is being fast-tracked into Andoni Iraola’s first-team plans this season after a standout pre-season that has reshaped Liverpool’s entire midfield strategy, TEAMtalk understands.

Iraola’s early concern – and the big names considered

When it became clear Jones could be on his way, Iraola was worried.

“Before pre-season I am told that Andoni Iraola, aware of the Curtis Jones situation, was worried about the depth – one reason he wanted Jones to stay,” TEAMtalk Insider Graeme Bailey said.

That anxiety sent Liverpool into the market. Properly into it.

The club ran the rule over a host of options, including Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, both of whom made high-profile moves within the Premier League this summer to Arsenal and Tottenham respectively.

“Iraola also wanted work done on other options and we can confirm that was the case,” Bailey explained. “A host of options were assessed – they looked at the Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes situations, but they were not right for them.”

Liverpool didn’t stop at established names. Recruitment staff dug deep into the younger end of the market too, putting serious work into profiles such as Adam Wharton, Alex Scott and Lamine Camara.

“But the likes of Adam Wharton, Alex Scott and Lamine Camara – very good young players – have been assessed and they like what they have seen and heard, but we are talking £50, £60 or even more than £70million in terms of deals.”

The numbers were eye-watering. The fit wasn’t perfect. And inside the club, something else was happening.

Nyoni changes the plan

The real breakthrough came from within.

Nyoni, already well regarded in the academy, used pre-season to force his way into the conversation. Then he stayed there.

“Then in comes Nyoni and he has blown Iraola away, they firmly believe he is first-team ready and can compete with the likes of Szoboszlai, Gravenberch and Mac Allister – they really see that as a midfield four and they even have Endo still around,” Bailey said.

That is a serious endorsement. Not a token pathway line, not a cup-minutes promise. Inside Liverpool, Nyoni is now being treated as a genuine first-team option, not a youngster waiting for the odd late cameo.

The decision not to directly replace Jones is rooted in that belief. Liverpool did explore bringing in an established midfielder, but the combination of huge fees and Nyoni’s rapid rise has pushed them towards trusting what they already have.

For supporters scanning the transfer rumours and wondering why no new central midfielder has arrived, the club’s stance is blunt.

“So a lot of Liverpool fans wondering why they are not seeing a new midfielder, even with Jones’ exit, the answer is simple – the club say they don’t need it,” Bailey said.

Market watch – with one eye open

Liverpool’s position is strong, but not stubborn.

Bailey notes that the club are still alive to opportunities if the right one appears, pointing to recent events at the back.

“I would point out the club said the same about a defender and then moved for Ronald Araujo, but I believe they do think they are in good shape in terms of midfield – because of Nyoni’s progress.”

For now, Iraola’s midfield picture is clear: Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Nyoni form the core, with Wataru Endo adding depth and experience.

Nyoni’s emergence has also allowed Liverpool to redirect their energy. The priority in the market remains at least one new winger, with midfield no longer seen internally as an area in need of another major signing.

The teenager is expected to get meaningful minutes this season and is already preparing to challenge established names for game time.

From the outside, allowing Jones to leave without a like-for-like replacement might look like a gamble. Inside Liverpool, the message is different, and it is firm: they believe Trey Nyoni is ready to carry that weight.
