Liverpool's Summer Rebuild: Urgency for Transformative Signings

Liverpool’s summer rebuild was meant to roar. So far, it has barely cleared its throat.

Back in June, the message from Anfield was bold. This was supposed to be a statement window, the one that armed Andoni Iraola with a refreshed, aggressive Liverpool capable of evolving beyond the Jürgen Klopp era. Big moves, big names, big intent.

Instead, August has arrived with a familiar knot in the stomach. The squad still looks short where it obviously needs help, and the market has turned into a slog.

Yan Diomande was pencilled in as the marquee arrival, the man to step into the huge shadow left by Mohamed Salah and headline a revamped forward line. Another top-level winger was expected to follow, giving Liverpool fresh dynamism in the wide areas.

None of that has materialised.

Liverpool missed out on Diomande. Ronald Araujo and Victor Munoz have come in to add depth and a touch of quality, but the glaring issues in the squad remain. Everyone can see them. No one at Anfield has solved them yet.

And then there is the other side of the problem: the players who are still there.

Liverpool’s non-homegrown quota is full. Deadwood is clogging up valuable spots, leaving the club stuck in a holding pattern. Until someone like Wataru Endo, Calvin Ramsay or Federico Chiesa moves on, Liverpool are effectively handcuffed in the market.

So the window has become a waiting game. An anxious one.

Talks with PSG over a double deal for Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye are ongoing, with Liverpool pushing to land both. Whether they can actually pull off that kind of double swoop is still uncertain, but the intent is clear: the attack needs reshaping, and quickly.

The urgency is sharpened by another storyline that refuses to go away.

Cody Gakpo’s future is now firmly under the microscope. A Premier League winner and an important figure in recent seasons, the Dutchman has credit in the bank. Even so, there is a growing sense that Liverpool would be prepared to listen if a serious offer lands on the table before the window shuts.

On the face of it, that feels counterintuitive. This is a squad already short on attacking depth, yet one of its established forwards could be sacrificed. Look a little closer, though, and it explains why Liverpool are pushing so hard for both Mbaye and Barcola.

If those two arrive, Iraola suddenly has a very different front line to work with. More options. More profiles. More room to be ruthless.

That is where Gakpo comes back into focus. Tottenham are keen on the Netherlands international, and interest from north London is not going away. If Spurs put down the right money, it would not be a shock to see Gakpo heading to the capital before deadline day.

Liverpool cannot afford to get that call wrong. Letting Gakpo go without securing proper replacements would be reckless given the current state of the squad. Any exit has to be part of a broader plan, not a desperate cash grab.

Barcola and Mbaye are central to that plan. If both deals get over the line, Liverpool could justify cashing in on Gakpo for a significant fee and using that money to reshape the attack around Iraola’s ideas. One big decision would trigger several more.

And the first domino looks close to falling.

In France, Le Parisien report that Barcola’s future is accelerating fast. A move is described as a matter of days rather than weeks, and Liverpool now stand as his only serious suitor. The path to Anfield is clear.

If that deal happens, the mood around Liverpool’s summer shifts instantly. The window that has felt slow, cautious and frustrating would suddenly have a jolt of electricity running through it.

Liverpool wanted a transformative summer. They might still get one — but it is arriving late, and with some huge calls attached.
