Liverpool's Struggle to Sign PSG Forward Mbaye

Liverpool’s pursuit of PSG forward Mbaye is threatening to unravel just as the clock starts to scream on the summer window.

The deal that was supposed to be the statement signing of Andoni Iraola’s new era has stalled, and the player’s patience is running out. According to L’Equipe, the Senegalese attacker is now ready to seriously consider other clubs after what has become a drawn-out and draining saga. From Mbaye’s side, the feeling is simple: Liverpool have taken too long.

€20m gap and rising tension

At the heart of the stand-off lies a brutal numbers problem. Liverpool and PSG remain separated by a hefty €20 million in their valuations of the Senegal international. That isn’t a minor detail to be smoothed over in a late-night call; it is a chasm that both clubs must bridge quickly if the transfer is to happen at all.

Talks are still moving, but only just. While negotiations between the clubs inch forward, Mbaye’s growing frustration with the pace of the process has become a serious complication. The concern at PSG is no longer just about money. It’s about a player who feels his future has been left hanging for too long.

Inside the dressing room, he is not alone. Team-mate Bradley Barcola is also understood to have voiced irritation at the delays, even if on a smaller scale. The mood music around PSG’s attacking talents is changing, and Liverpool are right in the middle of it.

Iraola’s attacking rebuild under strain

For Iraola, the timing could hardly be worse. Liverpool are scrambling to rebuild an attack that has lost its defining figure. Mohamed Salah’s departure has ripped out both goals and aura from the front line, and this summer has brought further damage elsewhere in the squad.

Key figures Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate and Andrew Robertson have all moved on, stripping away experience and stability from a side that had already slumped badly last season. Arne Slot paid for that collapse with his job after a torrid 2025-26 campaign, opening the door for Iraola’s arrival at Anfield.

The new head coach has not been idle. Victor Munoz, Jeremy Jacquet and Barcelona loanee Ronald Araujo have come through the door, but none of them are the kind of marquee attacking name that shifts the mood around a club. Mbaye was supposed to be that signing. Right now, he is anything but.

Missed targets and a shrinking window

Liverpool’s search for wide firepower has already taken a hit. A €50m bid for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh was rejected, underlining just how hard it is to prise elite young attackers from Premier League rivals. At the same time, Cody Gakpo is being heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, a potential exit that would thin Iraola’s options even further.

If Liverpool fail to land Mbaye, Barcola or Minteh, they risk entering the new season with some of the leanest winger options in the division. That is not a platform for a reset. It is a gamble.

The stakes are clear. Less than ten days remain before the transfer window closes. Mbaye is irritated, PSG are holding firm on their price, and Liverpool’s negotiating stance has left them with a deal that could collapse at any moment.

There is no hiding place now. Iraola’s side open their 2026-27 Premier League campaign away to Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday, with the squad still short and the market still unforgiving.

Liverpool wanted a new attacking leader. Over the next week, they will find out whether they are willing to pay the price to get one.
