Liverpool Enter Race for Matias Fernandez-Pardo

Liverpool have moved into the race for Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo, with the club understood to have made enquiries over a late-window deal.

A well-placed source on X (formerly Twitter) claims Liverpool made contact on Wednesday, testing the waters over a player long tracked by Newcastle United. The Tyneside club are keen to add the Belgian international this summer, but the dynamic around the deal has shifted.

Liverpool circle as Newcastle push for Fernandez-Pardo

Newcastle have been working on options to support and complement Alexander Isak, and Fernandez-Pardo has emerged as one of the names high on their list. Now Liverpool have stepped into the conversation, raising the prospect of a classic late-window tug of war.

This is not simply about a traditional winger.

Fernandez-Pardo has built his reputation at Gent and then Lille as a wide forward who can step inside and operate through the middle. His senior appearances show a player comfortable drifting into central zones, offering managers a flexible attacking tool rather than a fixed touchline-hugger.

That versatility matters. Liverpool are heading into a season in which they will lean heavily on Hugo Ekitike through the middle for long stretches of the 2026/27 campaign. Behind him, depth at centre-forward is thin. A wide forward who can credibly cover the No.9 role suddenly looks very attractive.

Creator more than killer

The numbers tell a clear story. Fernandez-Pardo is not a penalty-box predator in the mould of Isak. He does not profile as a ruthless, high-volume finisher at this stage of his career.

What he does offer is service.

His Ligue 1 output for Lille in 2025/26 points towards a facilitator – a player who can carry the ball, combine in tight spaces and feed the main striker. For a side built around a focal point like Isak, that skillset fits neatly. For Liverpool, who are reshaping their attack and seeking different ways to supply Ekitike, it has obvious appeal.

The question is where he would play most often.

Reports suggest Liverpool’s interest is focused on the flanks, particularly the left. That only stacks up if the club are convinced the 21-year-old can be just as effective on the right, where minutes are harder to come by and tactical demands are different. Signing a predominantly left-sided winger without that assurance would crowd an area of the squad that already carries strong competition.

And there is another layer. Liverpool are also deep in talks with PSG over Bradley Barcola. Moving firmly for Fernandez-Pardo on the left would raise serious doubts about whether that deal is still on track – or whether the club are quietly preparing an alternative path.

For now, the lines are open, the clock is ticking, and a winger who can slide inside is at the centre of a battle between two clubs with very different attacking puzzles to solve.
