Liverpool Pursue Bayern Prodigy Lennart Karl Amid Wirtz Struggles
When Jürgen Klopp walked through the doors at Anfield almost a decade ago, many expected a German invasion. The logic felt simple: German coach, German market, German core.
It never quite played out that way.
Klopp pushed for Timo Werner, Julian Brandt and Mario Götze at different points of his Liverpool tenure. The club went another way. Werner’s alternative was Diogo Jota. Brandt’s was Mo Salah. History has already judged those calls kindly.
Even so, Klopp did not ignore the Bundesliga. Dominik Szoboszlai and Ibrahima Konaté arrived from there. So did Ryan Gravenberch, Joël Matip and Naby Keïta. A steady stream, not a flood.
Yet the biggest name Liverpool have prised from Germany came after Klopp’s reign in the dugout ended.
Wirtz excitement turns into an early headache
Florian Wirtz was supposed to be the crown jewel. Liverpool beat off Manchester City and Bayern Munich to land him, a statement victory in the market and a sign that Anfield still carried heavyweight pull.
The fanbase buzzed. This was the Bundesliga’s brightest playmaker, the man who had lit up Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen.
The reality so far has been starkly different.
Wirtz has started the season in low gear. His performances have been flat, his influence limited. Liverpool are struggling to get him on the ball in the right pockets, and when he does receive it, he has not stamped his authority on games.
He has been underwhelming. Liverpool expected a lot more.
The fix, on paper, is obvious: build the team around him, just as Alonso did at Leverkusen. Give him the same central role, the same freedom, the same structure designed to accentuate his strengths. If Liverpool can recreate that environment, there is still every chance Wirtz looks like the player they thought they had signed.
While that tactical riddle is being worked on, Liverpool’s recruitment department is not standing still.
Liverpool make informal move for Lennart Karl
According to Ekrem Konur, Liverpool have already made informal contact over a move for Bayern Munich wonderkid Lennart Karl, a teenager who has been smashing records with the German champions.
Karl has been billed as the outstanding German talent of his generation. A natural No 10 who can also operate out wide, he combines sharp technical quality with the kind of versatility modern coaches crave.
His rise has not gone unnoticed back home. Now Germany head coach, Klopp himself recently singled Karl out for praise in his second press conference in the national team job.
"When I met Lennart for the first time and shook his hand, I immediately realised: this boy is ready. He's a real powerhouse and very confident, with very pleasant manners. He's also a bit 'cheeky/sassy', which I like. He had some outstanding moments before his injury. It was a really unfortunate time for him to get injured," Klopp said.
Those are not throwaway compliments. They are the words of a coach who has built title-winning sides around young, fearless attackers.
Karl’s numbers back up the hype. At just 18, he already has 19 goal contributions in 45 matches for Bayern’s first team. That kind of end product, at that age, in that environment, is rare.
For Liverpool, actually pulling off a deal for Karl would be remarkable. It would mean persuading Bayern to part with a player many in Germany see as a future cornerstone of both club and country.
Wirtz still has time to become that figure at Anfield. But if Liverpool manage to add Karl to the mix as well, the next era of their attack could be shaped by two of Germany’s brightest young creators.
