Liverpool's Urgent Midfielder Search: The Lamine Camara Dilemma
Liverpool are staring at the kind of transfer decision that can shape a season – and they are running out of time to make it.
They need a midfielder. Not in a vague, long-term-planning sense. Right now.
Sunday’s draw at Newcastle United stripped away any remaining doubt. Liverpool’s midfield offered little protection, leaving the back line repeatedly exposed as Newcastle drove through the centre of the pitch almost at will. Counter-attacks flowed, runners burst into space, and there was no natural shield in front of the defence.
A proper anchor in the middle would transform this team. None of Liverpool’s current midfielders are specialists in that role, and it showed.
Finding that profile late in a transfer window is usually a fantasy. Clubs cling to key players once the clock ticks down, even when big money is on the table, because replacing them becomes almost impossible.
Which is why the situation around Lamine Camara feels so baffling.
Camara ticks every box Liverpool have been trying to fill. At 22, he has already put together multiple seasons of high-level consistency. He is robust, reliable, and carries a blend of qualities that is incredibly rare in European football.
There are not many midfielders who can shoulder a huge share of the defensive workload and still be a primary creator. Camara is one of that tiny group – and arguably the standout.
The numbers back it up. Across the top five leagues, he is the only midfielder who ranks in the top 10 per cent both for share of defensive workload and for creating big chances in 2025/26. Only 22, and already operating at that level on both sides of the ball.
The pattern is no fluke. The 2024/25 data tells almost the same story: again, Camara stands alone as the only player to hit the top 10 per cent in both categories. Two seasons, same outcome. Same dominance.
Put another way: as transfer bets go, Camara is about as safe as it gets. He does everything to an above-average standard for a midfielder in a top league and is genuinely elite in the very areas Liverpool are crying out to strengthen.
And here’s the twist. He is on the market.
Reports from Foot Mercato and other outlets say Chelsea are pushing ahead with a deal for Camara, while Liverpool have been offered the chance to step in. The door is open.
Yet all indications are that Liverpool are prepared to walk past it. The club seem ready to move on to other targets, leaving Camara to head for Stamford Bridge while they search for an alternative – one who will almost certainly be harder to prise away and, on paper, a worse tactical fit.
With the window closing and the midfield laid bare at Newcastle, the question almost asks itself: can Liverpool really afford to let this one go to Chelsea?
