Liverpool Negotiates Loan Move for Harvey Elliott to Valencia

Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the transfer window ticks towards Tuesday night’s deadline.

The 23-year-old, who has attracted interest from several clubs across the summer, is now the subject of serious negotiations with the La Liga side ahead of the 11pm cut-off on September 1. Valencia are leading the race as they look to add creativity and energy to their attacking options.

Elliott is understood to have already spoken with Valencia boss Carlos Corberan about how he would be used at Mestalla. The proposed move is a straight loan, but any deal is expected to tie in with a potential Liverpool contract extension to protect the value of a player whose current terms run until the summer of 2028.

Right now, his prospects at Anfield look uncertain. Elliott has yet to make a match-day squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola, despite returning to pre-season with the Reds after a difficult year at Aston Villa.

His time at Villa Park never really ignited. He joined on loan but barely featured, and an appearance off the bench in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Newcastle a year ago effectively boxed him in for the rest of the season, preventing another move in the January window due to registration rules.

Villa, for their part, were careful. They were determined not to let Elliott reach the 10-game mark that would have triggered a £35m obligation to buy. While Unai Emery’s side went on to lift the Europa League, Elliott watched most of it from the fringes, unable to turn the loan into a permanent breakthrough.

Back with Liverpool on their pre-season tour of the United States, Elliott spoke candidly in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30, admitting he did not yet know which direction his career would take under Iraola.

“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions,” he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."

Liverpool had been expecting Valencia to firm up their interest before the weekend. That contact has now arrived, and discussions over a loan are under way as the clock runs down.

Elliott joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already made 149 appearances for the Reds. The next move will decide whether that tally grows in the short term – or whether his story briefly shifts to the Mestalla and a fresh start in La Liga.
