Liverpool Secures First Win Under Iraola with 2-0 Victory at Ipswich

IPSWICH, England — Liverpool did not ease their way into the Andoni Iraola era. They smashed the door down.

After back-to-back 2-2 draws against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, Iraola’s first Premier League win arrived with a clean, clinical 2-0 victory at Ipswich on Friday night, built on a ruthless early brace from Alexander Isak and a statement debut for big-money signing Bradley Barcola.

Isak strikes early, twice

Ipswich barely had time to settle into their first home game against one of the league’s heavyweights before Isak cut them open.

On six minutes, Cody Gakpo slipped a sharp pass into the right side of the area. Isak met it in stride, hammered a fierce effort at Kjell Scherpen and watched the ball ricochet off the goalkeeper and into the net. Relief for Liverpool. A release of frustration from those opening draws.

Three minutes later, the same combination ripped Ipswich apart again.

Gakpo, drifting deeper, shaped a stunning, outside-of-the-boot pass from distance, curling it behind the home back line and straight into Isak’s path. The Sweden international slowed, shifted feet, and then buried his finish with authority. Two chances, two goals, and Liverpool were cruising before Ipswich could regroup.

The early double gave Iraola exactly what his first two games had lacked: control. From there, Liverpool managed the tempo, forced Ipswich to chase, and kept the newly promoted side at arm’s length.

Barcola’s first taste of England

The night also marked the first glimpse of Bradley Barcola in a Liverpool shirt.

Signed from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday in a deal worth 123 million pounds ($166 million), the Frenchman stepped off the bench in the 63rd minute. The fee alone guarantees scrutiny; this was only an opening act, a short cameo, but it underlined how quickly Iraola wants to fold him into the squad.

By then, Liverpool had already done the damage. Isak’s brace allowed Iraola to rotate, to experiment, to give his record signing a low-pressure introduction to the Premier League.

Mixed start for promoted Ipswich

For Ipswich, promoted at the end of last season, this was another sharp reminder of the step up. They leave with two defeats and one win from their first three matches back in the top flight, the optimism of promotion now colliding with the reality of elite finishing.

Isak needed just nine minutes to show the difference.
