Under Jürgen Klopp, the English midfielder felt untouchable. He was one of the bright, creative sparks, regularly among the first names on the team sheet and a symbol of Liverpool’s next generation.

Since Klopp’s departure, the 23-year-old has struggled to convince either Arne Slot or Andoni Iraola. Minutes have dried up, influence has faded, and the sense of inevitability about a summer exit has grown with every week.

Now, according to Spanish outlet Deportes Cope Valencia, Liverpool are prepared to strike a deal with Valencia over a loan move. The report describes the La Liga side “speeding up” their push for Elliott, saying they have been working on the loan “for days” and that both clubs want the move. The sticking point is clear: his salary.

If that hurdle is cleared, Elliott will swap Anfield for Mestalla and a very different kind of pressure.

A career that never quite took off

Elliott’s last loan was supposed to be his launchpad. Instead, it became a warning.

Shipped out to Aston Villa last season, he was widely expected to play his way into a permanent deal and close the Liverpool chapter for good. It never happened. Unai Emery opted against making the move permanent and Elliott managed just nine appearances across the entire campaign.

He returned to Liverpool with faint hope. Iraola publicly insisted every player would be treated as if they were a new signing, a clean slate for all. Elliott still couldn’t seize it.

That failure stung supporters as much as the player. With Florian Wirtz struggling last term and Mohamed Salah now gone, there is space in this Liverpool side for a creative wide player or attacking midfielder to claim. Elliott, on paper, fits that profile. On the pitch, nothing has clicked.

Is it confidence? Rhythm? A tactical misfit? Whatever the cause, the former Fulham prodigy has slipped from “future star” to “spare part” in alarming fashion.

Wherever Elliott lands this summer – Valencia if the numbers add up, or another suitor if they don’t – the stakes are obvious. At 23, this loan cannot be another quiet detour. It has to be the season that defines what comes next.

Either he proves he can still shape games at the top level and returns as an asset Liverpool can use or sell from a position of strength.
