That’s the threat. Liverpool have the player’s approval, but they don’t yet have the player.
A gamble Liverpool may have to take
For now, Liverpool remain Barcola’s first choice. That matters. But every day without a breakthrough nudges the door open for Arsenal.
Liverpool’s stance is understandable. They do not want to be dragged into a bidding war or bullied into paying beyond what they believe is fair. Yet if the difference truly comes down to an extra £10m, the question is brutal in its simplicity: can they afford not to push that bit further?
The sporting context makes the dilemma even sharper. Andoni Iraola starts the Premier League season against Newcastle with Federico Chiesa as his only natural right winger. Barcola operates mainly off the left, but his versatility across the front line is a major part of the appeal. He offers high-level quality, tactical flexibility and immediate depth in an area where Liverpool are thin.
