Lion City Sailors Sack Coach Jesus Casas Before Season Opener

Lion City Sailors have stunned Singapore football by sacking head coach Jesus Casas just five days before they open the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) campaign against Tampines Rovers.

The club announced the decision on Sept 1 with a brief, 30-word statement on Facebook, confirming only that they had parted ways with the Spaniard and that assistant coach Varo Moreno will take charge of the first team until further notice.

No explanation. No soft landing. Just a clean break less than seven months after his arrival.

Casas, 52, had been appointed in February on a long-term deal running until the end of the 2027-28 season, a clear signal then that the Sailors saw him as the man to steer their project deep into the future.

His CV carried weight. The former Iraq coach had spent years in Spain working with youth sides before stepping up as assistant to Javi Gracia at English club Watford in early 2018. He was also previously shortlisted for the Singapore national team role, which eventually went to Gavin Lee.

His name has not been far from the international conversation either. The Korea Herald recently reported that Casas had applied for the vacant South Korea national team job and was one of three candidates on the final shortlist.

Now his Sailors stint is over before he has even completed a full pre-season cycle.

Casas himself had come in as a replacement for another high-profile casualty. Serbian coach Aleksandar Rankovic was dismissed on Feb 6, a day after a 2-0 home defeat by Cambodian side Svay Rieng in the Asean Club Championship.

Rankovic’s record was not without success. Across 2½ years, he delivered an SPL title and guided the Sailors to the Singapore Cup for the third time. But the shine faded when they crashed out in the group stage of Asian Champions League Two, just a season after the club’s dream run to the final of the same competition. The standards had shifted; so did the patience.

The Sailors still finished the domestic season on top. On May 3, they secured back-to-back SPL titles for the first time in their history with a goalless draw against Tampines Rovers, edging the Stags by two points.

Now, the same opponents stand in their way again, but the context could hardly be more different.

They meet on Sept 6 in the Community Shield at Jalan Besar Stadium at 7.30pm, the traditional curtain-raiser for the 2026-27 SPL season. Moreno will be the man in the dugout, thrust from assistant to interim leader just as the competitive action resumes.

The league campaign proper starts swiftly after. On Sept 12, the Sailors face Hougang United at Bishan Stadium, also at 7.30pm, with questions swirling around the club’s direction and stability.

Two titles in the bag. Two coaches sacked in a matter of months.
