Leeds United Sign Nico Elvedi for £8.5m: Farke's Familiar Pillar
Leeds United have landed experienced Switzerland defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth up to £8.5m, handing Daniel Farke a familiar pillar for the heart of his back line.
The 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Elland Road, ending an 11-year stay in Germany where he became a mainstay for Monchengladbach and one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable centre-backs.
Farke reunion seals the deal
Elvedi did not hide the importance of Farke in his decision. The pair worked together at Monchengladbach in the 2022-23 season and the defender made it clear that relationship pulled him towards West Yorkshire.
"He is also a big point for this change," Elvedi said of Farke. "It was just one year but I loved to have him as a manager. I learned a lot from him and I will learn a lot now."
Leeds agreed an initial fee of £6.8m with Monchengladbach, with a further £1.7m in add-ons to take the package to £8.5m. For a player with Elvedi’s pedigree, the club view it as smart business rather than a gamble.
A decade of service, and 73 caps
Elvedi arrives with heavyweight experience. He made 364 appearances for Monchengladbach across all competitions, growing from promising youngster into defensive leader during more than a decade at the club.
On the international stage, he has become a cornerstone for Switzerland. The defender has 73 caps and played every minute of their recent run to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, underlining both his durability and his trust within the national setup.
That blend of club longevity and international know-how is exactly what Leeds have been hunting as they reshape the spine of their team.
Busy window at Elland Road
Elvedi becomes Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer transfer window, joining James Trafford, Harry Wilson and fellow defender Tarik Muharemovic in a steadily rebuilt squad.
His arrival has already triggered movement. Sebastiaan Bornauw has left Elland Road to join Hamburg on a season-long loan, a clear sign that Elvedi is expected to step straight into a central role in Farke’s plans.
There was more business on Wednesday as well. Striker Joel Piroe completed a season-long loan move to West Ham, trimming Leeds’ attacking options but freeing up room and resources for Farke’s defensive reshuffle.
Leeds now have their leader at the back. The question is simple: how quickly can Elvedi turn familiarity with his manager into authority on the pitch?
