Leeds United Engaged in Talks to Sign Manchester City Goalkeeper James Trafford

Leeds United are reportedly negotiating to acquire goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City ahead of the summer transfer window. After Karl Darlow left for Manchester United on a free transfer, Leeds have been searching for fresh options to challenge Lucas Perri.

Initial rumors linked Japan international Zion Suzuki with a move from Parma to Elland Road, but those have faded. Instead, sources from The Athletic reveal Leeds are intensifying their pursuit of Trafford, who appears eager to depart the Etihad Stadium.

Progress and Interest in Trafford

Leeds seem to be making strides in convincing the 23-year-old England international to join their squad. Previously, Newcastle United showed interest, but they are no longer contenders. Although Trafford featured 17 times in all competitions last season, only four appearances came in the Premier League.

Despite limited league action, he contributed significantly to Manchester City's victories in the FA Cup and EFL Cup. The club paid between £27 million and £31 million to sign him from Burnley last summer, and they are likely aiming to recover a similar amount.

Leeds' Ambitions and Squad Reinforcements

After managing to remain in the Premier League by gathering momentum late in the 2025-26 season, Leeds are eyeing a finish in the top half for 2026-27. Their signings so far include defender Tarik Muharemovic from Bosnia & Herzegovina for £34 million and winger Harry Wilson from Fulham on a free transfer—moves that might prove wise.

If Trafford joins Leeds, it would mark an upgrade over Darlow. Many see the goalkeeper as a potential future first-choice for England, adding weight to Leeds’ strategy.
