Leeds United Appeal Over Goalscorer Controversy Against Newcastle

Leeds United have lodged a formal appeal over the identity of their second goalscorer in Monday night’s 4-1 win against Newcastle United, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin fights to reclaim a strike currently credited to Jayden Bogle.

The incident came in the 34th minute at Elland Road. James Justin whipped in a cross from the right, Calvert-Lewin attacked it and wheeled away believing he had headed Leeds into a 2-0 lead. Replays, though, prompted debate over whether Bogle got the final touch, and the goal was later awarded to the defender.

Calvert-Lewin, who did get on the scoresheet with Leeds’ third in first-half stoppage time, looked stunned when the referee informed him the earlier effort had been reassigned to his team-mate. What he thought was a first-half brace had, on paper at least, become a single goal.

The Premier League’s match centre later confirmed on X that the “goal accreditation panel adjudged Leeds’ 34th minute goal as a Bogle goal”, rubber-stamping the initial decision.

Leeds have now challenged that ruling. A second, separate panel will be convened to review the footage again and make a final call on who is officially credited with the strike.

The scoreline will not change. But for Calvert-Lewin, chasing numbers and momentum in a Leeds shirt, the outcome could still matter a great deal.
