Lee Clark Resigns as Hartlepool United Head Coach

Lee Clark resigned as Hartlepool United head coach with immediate effect after a bruising 3-1 home defeat by Worthing, a result that dragged the club deeper into trouble and sparked open revolt in the stands.

The loss was Hartlepool’s third in a row and their sixth in seven National League matches, a grim run that left them 18th before the rest of the afternoon’s fixtures. Boos and calls for Clark to go rang around Victoria Park as the game slipped away, the mood turning from frustration to resignation long before the final whistle.

“I resign from my position with immediate effect,” said the former Newcastle, Sunderland and Fulham midfielder.

“I wanted to give this club and the fans something to be proud of, what they deserve, but I haven't been able to do that unfortunately.”

He did not try to dress it up. The 52-year-old, who previously managed Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City, admitted the project he had hoped to lead simply had not taken off.

“I was excited to take the job and I wanted to be the man to get them back to where they need to be and deserve to be, but it hasn't worked out,” he added.

The defeat to Worthing felt like a breaking point. Hartlepool, aiming to push back towards the top end of the division this season, instead find themselves glancing nervously over their shoulders, their form collapsing just as the campaign begins to settle into shape.

Off the pitch, the club has been trying to reset its direction. In January, American businessman Landon Smith completed a takeover, raising hopes of a more stable future and a swift end to their four-year stay in the National League.

The reality has been harsher. Clark’s departure triggers yet another search for a new figurehead. Hartlepool will now look for their ninth permanent manager or head coach since dropping out of the English Football League.

The question now is simple and stark: who can finally halt the churn and drag this club back to where it believes it belongs?
