Kylian Mbappé Joins Champions League Royalty with 71 Goals
Kylian Mbappé has started the 2026-27 season like a man in a hurry.
Five games. Five goals. And on Tuesday night, Europe felt that familiar jolt again as the Real Madrid forward struck first in their Champions League opener against Inter.
The breakthrough came in the 14th minute, born from a mistake and finished with ruthless clarity. Curtis Jones lost the ball, Brahim Díaz pounced and slid a pass into Mbappé’s path. One touch, one glance, one first-time finish past Josep Martínez. Clinical. Cold. Inevitable.
That goal did more than tilt the tie Madrid’s way. It dragged Mbappé into the company of royalty.
It was his 71st goal in the Champions League, pulling him level with Raúl González, the iconic No. 7 who once defined an era at the Bernabéu. Fifth on the all-time list now carries Mbappé’s name as well, alongside a man whose statue might as well be carved into the club’s history.
He is only 27.
The numbers above him remain daunting. Cristiano Ronaldo sits on a mountain of 140 goals, built at Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. Lionel Messi follows on 129 from his years with Barcelona and PSG. Robert Lewandowski stands at 109, Karim Benzema at 90. Then comes the new Madrid star, already stalking legends.
The gap to Ronaldo is enormous. But Mbappé’s pace is terrifying.
Madrid didn’t wait long to twist the knife. Just nine minutes after the opener, the Spanish giants doubled their lead thanks to a moment Josep Martínez will want to forget. The Inter goalkeeper hesitated, Federico Valverde did not. The Uruguayan stole in, poked the ball away and forced it over the line to make it 2-0.
Inter had handed Madrid two openings. Madrid punished both.
For Mbappé, though, this night will be remembered less for the scoreline and more for the company he joined. Raúl was once the standard for a Madrid forward in Europe. Now the club’s current superstar has matched his Champions League tally and is charging toward the next rung of the ladder.
All-Time Champions League Goals
- 140: Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus)
